The Chief Nurse for Critical Care Services: provides executive leadership and direct supervision to the Nurse Managers over the following critical care units: ICU, TCU, ER and the Nursing Supervisors that support the acute services 24/7. Assesses, plans, and evaluates the processes and daily operations of the inpatient units. Assists Nurse Managers and APNs to carry out the functions and activities of their roles.

Duties

Supports RN residency programs. Assures competencies for all levels of nursing staffing working within HCS, assuring all who float have the correct documented competencies. Supports the development of Evidence Based Practice Culture throughout HCS. Develops and utilizes strong collaborative relationships with physician counterparts including, but not limited to, Chief of Medicine, Chief of Surgery, Chief Resident and Chief Hospitalist. 1. Provides executive input in the strategic planning, budget, mission, operational planning, and policy development for local and network efforts. 2.Utilizes current trends and relevant theories in an analytical framework to design/modify, implement, and measure integrated programs and activities to achieve clinical and administrative goals of the medical center and/or network. Evaluates outcomes against strategic priorities. 3. Demonstrates substantial and continuous responsibility for directing and managing an integrated program. 4. Provides leadership in the development of policies and systems to devise strategies that will enable the organization to successfully manage bioethical issues and protect patient and family rights. 5. Safeguards patient privacy and maintains confidentiality of all electronic and printed patient information according to HIPAA guidelines, the Privacy Act, and as stated in the Medical Center Memo on ADP Security. Maintains confidentiality of assigned access code and by exiting (logging out) from the ADP system when leaving terminal. 7. Manages the resources (financial, human, materiel and/or informational) of a complex program or service in a manner which applies professional standards of practice in the most effective, efficient method resulting in favorable outcomes. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse IV - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 4-5 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and appropriate basic or advanced certification desired, and approximately 3-4 years of nursing practice/experience. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Eligible applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, without hazard to themselves or others. Depending on the essential duties of a specific position, usable vision, color vision, hearing or speech may be required.
