Duties
Serve as senior engineer in the construction and project management of US Army Corps of Engineering Floating Plant construction projects.
Projects include floating plant such as barges, dredges, floating cranes, towboats, and survey boats.
Manage and administer the Marine Design Center Shipyard Safety Program.
Conduct necessary studies and analysis on overall project to ensure that the general arrangement and layout is compatible with the overall project.
Modify existing designs or components to accomplish specific functions different from those for which they were originally designed.
Provide safety staff inspections of contractor-owned shipyards.
Evaluate construction methods and compliance with appropriate specifications, regulations, and acceptable industry practices.
Interpret applicable Shipyard Safety and Occupational Health Program policies, regulations, and standards applicable to supply contract shipyard construction.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of up to 75% of the time.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 pounds in the regular performance of the duties.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Planning, coordinating, and supporting safety oversight of major and unique vessels; (2) Assisting management in formulating safety policies related to supply contract shipyard construction; (3) Performing safety inspections of contractor-owned shipyards; AND 4) Analyzing a wide variety unusual conditions, problems, or questions as related to shipyard safety operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).
