About the Position: In this position you will serve as a boatswain aboard a seagoing hopper dredge. As the leader of the deck crew, incumbent is responsible for the planning, assigning crew to jobs, directing the maintenance, upkeep and repair of deck machinery, dredging equipment and related systems, rigging, steel work, ship's gear, etc.
Duties
Determine supplies and tools required for maintenance and repair of deck machinery and related deck operations and notifies supervisor of needs.
Direct and assist subordinates in the interpretation and performance of complex jobs and those requiring extensive emergency repair operations.
Operates ship's launch and vehicle as required.
Within the framework of general assignments from the Chief Mate establish priorities and prepares work schedules.
Trains subordinates in safe work methods and utilization of all prescribed safety equipment.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- You must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state's driver's license.
- This is a mandatory drug Testing Designated Position (TDP), in accordance with EP 600-1-300, USACE Drug Testing Procedures for the Army’s Drug-Free Federal Workplace (DFW) Program, dated 28 Feb 01.
- You must have a current United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), Able Bodied Seaman (AB) Endorsement, or higher AND
- an Operator Uninspected Passenger Vessel (OUPV) license or higher AND a current Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): You must possess at least 2 years minimum experience working on a dredge maintaining the dredging equipment to include hydraulic systems. AND You must have a current United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), Able Bodied Seaman (AB) Endorsement, or higher AND an Operator Uninspected Passenger Vessel (OUPV) license or higher AND a current Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
Working Conditions: Works mostly outside exposed to extremes of weather conditions, heat, and noise. Possibility of falling or slipping on wet decks, ladders, etc. Possibility of drowning exists in the case of collision or more especially, when working over the side. Subject to dust, grease and soiling of clothing and skin surface. Must wear appropriate safety gear and protective clothing as required, and comply with sound safety practices. May be exposed to hot pipes, escaping steam and the effects of acids, solvents, and paint.
Physical Effort: Moderate to heavy lifting is typically required. Must possess sufficient agility to climb ladders in all sea conditions and to work in close quarters. Lifts and carries equipment and supplies normally up to 45 lbs. and occasionally over 45 lbs. Work requires prolonged standing, walking and climbing, all of which can cause exertion of the lower back. The employee must maintain good lower back physical condition. Incumbent must possess color and depth perception and be able to see by low visibility conditions in order to perform duties.
IAW NPPR 690-1-530 this position is dual-rated to the position of 3rd Mate, Hopper Dredge, WJ-5782-07. If qualified and possesses appropriate U.S. Coast Guard License/Certification, incumbent may be assigned to perform these duties on an intermittent, dual-rated capacity.
