This position reports to the Electric shop within the Maintenance Division of the Facilities Management service line at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System with a physical assignment to the Laundry/Textile care facility. The Textile care processing facility is the largest laundry in VISN 23 and among the most complex in the VA system operating 7 days a week, 12 hours per day with current annual production of approximately 2.5 million pounds annually.

Duties

Major duties listed but not limited to: Program, adjust, troubleshoot and perform scheduled and unscheduled service of the complex laundry equipment to include microcomputer and microprocessor controlled laundry equipment Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on belts, shackles, pulleys, shafts, gear and gear boxes, bearings, pumps, drives, motors, and/or transmissions Identify which sub-system is the root cause of the failure and repair to manufacturer standards Work on the complex systems and sub-systems in the Textile Care Processing Facility Perform diagnostics, disassembly, fabrication and replacement of some stationary parts, replacement of components, reassembly, and programing of the system Ability to select gauges and type of conductors, relays, wiring harnesses, motors, etc. by having a thorough knowledge of AC/DC electricity Plan, schedule, organize and prioritize routine work and respond immediately to unscheduled breakdowns as they occur Build relationships with outside vendors and contractors in addition to their peers in other VA Textile care processing facilities Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (work hours may be further discussed during the interview) Telework: Not available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/11/2024. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. To be found at least minimally qualified for the position of Laundry Equipment Mechanic WG-10 level, your application and supporting documents must demonstrate the critical knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential for satisfactory job performance. For this position, you must have the you have the ability to do the work without more than normal supervision in performing the full range of duties.Examples of qualifying specialized experience include but are not limited to: perform preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance, installation, troubleshooting and/or repair on laundry equipment; interpret engineering drawings that combine electrical and electronic schematics, pneumatics, hydraulics, logic diagrams and/or mechanical drawings; train and mentor lower grade shop members and provide on-the-job training to all; and perform various trades including plumbing/pipefitting, electrical, HVAC, welding/soldering, and/or structural utilities. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Working Conditions: The work is primarily indoors in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated shop area or building, but at times can be subjected to working outside for several hours in inclement weather conditions. Occasionally, the incumbent is exposed to the possibility of burns, cuts, electric shock, falls from a ladder and other normal hazards associated with working around machinery and confined spaces.
