Duties

As a Park Ranger (Interpretation), you will perform the following duties: Develops and presents a variety of programs including talks, musical performances, and demonstrations. Develops programs using principles of the National Park Service thematic interpretation model through topic research, familiarity with and creative use of delivery techniques. Provides informal interpretation and orientation for park guests in visitor centers and while roving in the field. Performs cashier duties and assist with a variety of special projects to support park goals. Promotes the safety of park visitors and stewardship of park resources in all interactions, and potentially serve as the initial contact for accident reporting and emergency assistance. Engages the public through presenting a complete and highly varied suite of formal structured programs (e.g., walks, talks, tours, presentations, demonstrations, events, and virtual interactions) and informal contacts/conversations with the public. Coordinates the development and implementation of special projects (e.g., special events, youth initiatives, teacher workshops, and regional or national committees) from beginning to end. Enhances in-park experiences by developing and offering a wide variety of fully accessible nonpersonal services and interpretive media. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-04/15/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following: Park guide or tour leader; Law enforcement or investigative work; Archeological or historical preservation research work; Forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; Management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four-years of course study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of course work in a major study -- natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. To compute this percentage, first divide the total months of qualifying experience by 12.
