As the Geospatial Data Scientist, you will perform professional and scientific work with geospatial data requiring the design, development, and adaptation of mathematical, statistical, econometric, and other scientific analytical methods and tools, and provide advice and insight about the probable effects of alternative courses of action.

Duties

Support growing analytic workflows by research, design, training and deployment of machine learning, mathematical modeling, visualization, and/or automation solutions within geospatial information systems. Examples: neural networks, computer vision, or natural language processing. Leverage some of the latest cloud technologies (ex. AWS) to scale appropriate efforts that can assist with model training, data manipulation, visualization, testing and analysis in the spaces of computer vision and natural language processing. Create programmatic solutions that curate, normalize, clean (to include filling in data gaps), and make securely accessible data for analytic customers which include other data scientists, analysts, and engineers. Work with Data Engineers, developers and analysts in an agile team to integrate automated solutions involving large internal and external data sources available on restricted networks through technologies such as SQL, REST, etc. Provide information and effectively partner within and beyond organizational unit to influence decisions or recommend technical solutions to technical experts who are in turn directly supporting warfighters.

  • Locations are not negotiable. The actual duty locations available may be located on the Air Force Civilian Service website.
  • This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Testing program. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use

For DR-I: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized Experience is defined as work in the private or public sector performing duties in or related to the work of the position being filled. Examples of specialized experience include understanding of methods and practices in identifying, formulating, evaluating, nurturing and promoting the generation and exchange of new theories, concepts, principles, methods, applications, and practices, experience applying quantitative and qualitative analysis and investigative techniques in order to synthesize data, evaluate significant factors, and recommend ways to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of work operations, application of mathematical and statistical theories. Experience with Python language and development environment OR multiple other programming languages such as C#, R, Java; knowledge of ArcPro or ArcMap; experience with computer vision or natural language processing suites/models; experience with cloud services (AWS or Azure) and in areas of Geospatial Information Science (cartography, geodesy, photogrammetry, geophysics, and remote sensing). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the DR-1/GS-07/9/11 broadband position in the federal service. For DR-II: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to DR-I/GS-11 level in the Federal service or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized Experience is defined as work in the private or public sector performing duties in or related to the work of the position being filled. Examples of specialized experience should include comprehensive experience of advanced scientific design and development principles, methods and practices in identifying, formulating, evaluating, nurturing and promoting the generation and exchange of new theories, concepts, principles, methods, applications, and practices, life cycle management concepts; cost-benefit analysis methods sufficient to evaluate the feasibility of proposed new development projects and the mission, operations and programs of customer organizations; advanced experience with the use of Python; understanding use of statistics and calculus answering real world problems. Experience in applying geospatial quantitative methods, analytics, and/or operations research analysis to the various phases of operational targeting, specifically data manipulation for network development, analysis, and modeling as well as visualization and communication of results, course of action recommendations, and effects assessments; experience with designing, training and integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning open-source neural network, computer vision and/or natural language processing solutions; Advanced experience with ArcPro in enabling analytics and visualization; ability to leverage Agile concepts like Scrum or Kanban; and ability to work independently within AWS to integrate hybrid capabilities and solve security/permission related challenges. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the DR-II/GS-12/13 broadband position in the federal service.
