This position is located in the Division of Quality Management of the Kayenta Service Unit, Kayenta, AZ. The purpose of this position is to serve as an Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) performs duties and responsibilities which include treating occupational medical and health emergencies, addressing hazards conditions in the work place, administers routine health prevention and screening programs, and refers more complicated medical cases to the appropriate physician or health facility.

Duties

The primary role of this position is serving as Hospital Occupational Health Nurse for Kayenta Service Unit. The incumbent: Performs primary care assessment, diagnosis, and implementation of treatment plans according to authorized medical standing orders (MSO) and standardized medical protocols for occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses. Provides acute care services that include medical emergencies where the employee is given the attention required to prevent loss of life or limb or to relieve suffering until he/she can be transferred to a treatment facility. Provides primary nursing care for illnesses occurring in the workplace including: nursing, assessment, diagnosis and implementation of treatment plan according to MSO and standardized medical protocols of the occupational and non-occupational illness of which the employee would not reasonably be expected to seek the attention of his/her personal physician, or to enable the employee to complete his/her current work site before consulting his/her personal physician. Performs the specialized health screening procedures audiograms, vision performance tests, blood glucose levels, and cancer screenings. Plans, schedules employees and supervisors for the phlebotomist with the contract laboratory, interprets whether the results are within normal limits, consults with the physician, and based on procedures, makes appropriate recommendations to the employee. Reviews medical records and physical examinations for completeness and accomplishment of appropriate follow-up and health teaching, the medical records are maintained in accordance with quality assurance and Federal and local protocols. Maintains liaison with, serves as a consultant to, and makes presentations to occupational health nurses in other agencies, outside health organizations, and professional associations regarding the expanded role of occupational health nurses.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Nursing School Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. Licensure For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Experience The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing. Basic Requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) Grade Level In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; or At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS 11: Must possess specialized experience in high level disinfectant processes that align with the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) and Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines; must have strong analytical skills to collect, interpret and respond to data metrics associated with employee exposures to blood borne illness and pathogens, and must possess skills and expertise to effectively address Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and guidelines as it relates to employee work related injuries. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
