You will serve as a Machinist in the Industrial Execution Department, Production Trades Division of FLEET READINESS CENTER SOUTHWEST. This announcement uses the Direct Hire Authority for Certain Personnel of the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

Duties

You will set up and perform intricate machining applications with multiple setups or operations on conventional and CNC Machine Tools to maintain exact dimensions. You will set up and perform work on machines such as 5 axis coordinate measuring machines, waterjet blasting, and cutting machines, grinders, milling machines, lathes, and drills. You will use a variety of machine tool attachments or related equipment to perform special adaptations of precision machine work. You will help in the development of tooling or fixturing, machine fixtures in place, plan and coordinate work processes, and plan the sequences of operations to meet job requirements. You will make interpretations and maintain accuracy in accordance with blueprints, drawings, work documents, aircraft technical documents, manuals, bulletins and directives, and/or requests from a Machinist Supervisor. You will use trigonometric, algebraic, and geometric formulas to make computations determining compound angles, gear ratios, pitch, lead, line intersect and tangent points, etc. to find information needed to complete assigned tasks. You will accomplish untried tasks, procedures, and prototypes while making independent interpretation and translation of work orders, drawings, and specifications.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • Hearing protection must be worn for noise levels of 85 DBA and double protection is required for levels over 96 DBA.
  • May be subject to eye stain due to precise nature of work required and must possess correctable near vision of Jaeger #2 at 14 inches and far vision correctable to 20/30 in one eye only.

Qualifications

The Screen-out Element for this position is: I have the ability to perform common tasks including: 1) Providing technical advice and recommendations to production while supporting organizations and customers regarding the examination and evaluation results; 2) Interpreting information from various sources such as: blueprints, detailed engineering specifications and technical directives; and 3) Using state-of-the-art computer hardware, operating computer data management programs, navigating through software directories and filing systems, and understanding the various extensions such as: ADCS, MRO, JDRS, CONOPS and etc. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
