The incumbent of this position will serve as an Industrial Hygienist for the Safety Service, Ralph H. Johnson Veteran Affairs Medical Center (RHJ V AMC) Charleston, SC; Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in North Charleston, Goose Greek, Myrtle Beach, Beaufort, Savannah GA, Hinesville GA, and the Vet Centers.

Duties

Duties of the position include but are not limited to: The incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing the program in accordance with (Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and RHJ V AMC policy and guidance.Serves as an Industrial Hygienist in the RHJ medical center where duties include, but are not limited to the following: asbestos control and abatement, formaldehyde, hearing conversation, hazard communication, nitrous oxide, mercury, hazardous and infectious waste management, water testing and treatment, respirator program, and anti-neoplastic drugs. Perform various duties in an Industrial Hygiene program to access work practices and environmental conditions for hazards to the health and safety of workers. include conducting studies of work operations and processes, examining work environments, analyzing findings, promulgating recommendations preparing various reports. Environmental conditions involve a variety of hazards including physical, chemical, and biological hazards; ionizing and non-ionizing radiation; and other environmental agents. Assigned work areas include industrial shops, surgical suites, production areas, laboratories, research areas, confined spaces and outdoor work sites. Regularly inspects the medical center to identify potential occupational health hazards and the need for further investigative studies and surveys. Studies and surveys performed involve determining compliance with various established criteria, evaluating exposures, and advising on control measures and changes in work procedures or schedules to comply with established health requirements, and providing information for evaluation purposes. In performing surveys/studies, incumbent must: I) select or devise methods and instruments; 2)personally or through others, conduct measurements; and 3) study and test materials associated with the work operation or work environment. Perform analysis to determine nature and degree of toxic materials present. Other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 0730-1600 Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/15/2024. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS 11 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS - 09. The grade may have been in any occupation but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS -09 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: . OR, Education: Applicants must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or LL.M. obtained in an accredited college or university, with a major field of study directly related to the position being filled.Note: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.OR Combination: Applicants may also possess combination of specialized experience and successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience directly related to the work of the Industrial Hygienist position. Note: Only education in excess of 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education may be used to qualify at the grade 11 level. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: ChemistryCommunicationCompliance InspectionTechnical Problem Solving Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The performance of duties requires long periods of walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, and bending. Moderate lifting and carrying of equipment, use of personal protective devices, and work in hazardous and confined spaces is required. Use of all appendages, good vision, and hearing are necessary. Emotional and mental stability are required.
