Qualifications

NOTE:  You must meet qualification requirements, including any requirements described in the Education section, by the closing date of this announcement. In addition to the basic entry education requirements, you must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as described below: To qualify for the GS-13 level, you need to have at least one year of specialized full-time experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in or related to the work of a chemist, including analysis of environmental samples, analysis of evidence supporting criminal investigations, and analytical method development that provides the specific knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a chemist. Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: Lead the identification of analytical approaches to meet project objectives. Conduct preparation, analysis, and data reporting on samples. Develop new methods, modify established methods, and extend their application to other situations. Perform method validation studies to demonstrate performance of new or modified methods. Determine appropriate quality control (QC) activities to meet data quality objectives. Ensure that results meet method requirements and data quality objectives. Provide technical assistance to Federal, State, local and/or tribal governments. Provide fact and subject matter expert testimony in civil and criminal judicial proceedings. Ensure that overall project objectives have been satisfied. Independently review environmental data, summaries, and reports. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education

You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.

A bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics; OR combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
