You will serve as a SHIPWRIGHT SUPERVISOR I in the TEMPORARY SERVICES SHOP in the PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will supervise 12-20 employees. You will coordinate with supervisors to prevent injury or disruption of urgent work. You will plan the sequence of job operations for groups of employees. You will read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, and work orders. You will set up and operate woodworking machines such as timber sizers, saw mill's, cut off saws, ripsaws, table saws, and drill presses. You will assess all fall hazards and implement plans to mitigate them. You will plan, organize, coordinate, and implement numerous quality-related issues and elements as they relate to job requirements. You will read, interpret, and correctly follow complex written instructions, drawings, specifications, engineering standards, and manufacturer's requirements.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Supervisors in the executive branch have a heightened personal responsibility for advancing government ethics. You will be required to review the 14 General Principles of Ethical Conduct at 5 CFR 2635.101.

Qualifications

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to Lead or Supervise others in the Shipwright trade and perform the following work: Training subordinates in work methods and procedures, proper use of tools and equipment. Planning division of workload based on capabilities of available manpower, materials and machine. Inspecting work to assure efficiency, economy, and safety operations. Interpreting blueprint and instructions in order to prepare layout, patterns and sketches.
