Duties

As a Science Officer you will: Serve as Associate Director for Science and as the principal advisor to the Division Director and Deputy Division Director on scientific matters Review reports, scientific papers, memoranda, congressional inquiries, and other similar materials for the purpose of providing written recommendations concerning scientific issues, may be called upon to provide testimony at the Office of Management and Budget OMB and Congressional hearings on issues of expertise in Division and Center research Apply epidemiological principles and/or procedures to investigate, review, analyze, and/or determine the cause(s) of problems, situations, inconsistencies, and/or issues related to programmatic degradation or systemic or causal parameters Provide consultative advice on all aspects of research, after the groundwork for studies has been developed Advise on the operational aspects of studies (collections and analysis of data, coverage and techniques of sampling, use of controls, etc.), and is instrumental in ensuring that research capabilities are fully utilized Prepare or review the preparation of all reports, articles or monographs describing findings from studies or projects conducted as part of the research and services programs Participate in policy and planning determination pertaining to the Division's research program Conceive, plan, evaluate, coordinate, and implement activities related to research programs, projects, etc. Represent the Division and Institute at meetings with representatives of other Federal agencies, State and local agencies, public health organizations, labor, industry, etc. Supervise a small contingent of positions, plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set, and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work, when necessary

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: analyzing environmental data associated with hazardous waste sites, and exposure assessment; conducting scientific research related to environmental public health programs; and planning epidemiologic studies, surveys, or investigations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education
