You will serve as a DECKHAND (FLO) in the PORT OPERATIONS DIVISION of NAVAL STATION.

Duties

You will operate and maintain the main engine and associated machinery to assist craft engineers. You will follow radio instructions to maintain safe vessel operations. You will perform line lash-up between a ship or craft and a tug to verify lines are safely secured. You will handle lines and cables during docking, moving, and towing operations.

Requirements

  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance while employed in the subject position. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Selectee must obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete a pre-placement medical examination and an annual medical examination.
  • This position requires rotating shift-work and call-back overtime to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • This position requires a certified Forklift Operator. Incumbent must have or obtain a Fork Lift license or certification to operate a forklift with capacity of up to 15,000 lbs. within 90 days after onboarding and maintain for duration of employment
  • This position requires incumbent to be a qualified Facility Response Team member. Incumbent must complete the FRT Course within 90 days after onboarding.
  • This position requires the incumbent to be qualified as a 2nd class swimmer and complete Shore Installation Management Basic Boat Coxswain Course within 90 days after onboarding.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION 1) Use and handling of equipment to include power equipment to include drills, grinders, impact wrenches, sanders, etc; 2) Interpret and applying policies, regulations, directives, instructions and procedures governing the work of the JBPHH Port Operations organization in order to provide recommendations for alternative vessel placement; 3) Operate a forklift to include manipulating controls for stopping, starting, backing-up, lifting and lowering forks, etc.; and maneuvering in tight areas and around people. Work frequently requires long periods of standing and walking; reaching and bending; climbing of stairs, scaffolding, and ladders; and lifting up to 50 pounds. WORK CONDITIONS: Work is performed on ships, submarines, and piers in various weather conditions including occasional exposure to hot sun, ocean spray, and rain. Subject to possible injury from falls on deck or erratic motion; and to possible strains, cuts, and bruises. Use of protective devices, clothing or equipment, while exposed to adverse environmental and hazardous work assignments (i.e. fumes, dust, ionizing, non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc.); and wearing of safety equipment in designated areas is mandatory, i.e., safety glasses, ear plugs, safety shoes, life jackets, etc. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
