This position is located at the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.

Duties

This is a bargaining unit position. This position is represented by AFGE. Please note that as provided for in the AFGE/VA Master Agreement the FIRST area of consideration for this position will be permanent employees of the local facility in which this position is being filled, the SECOND area of consideration will be employees at other VA facilities, and the THIRD area of consideration will be all other eligibles. Responsible for maintaining and completing all associated tasks involving monument maintenance. Reviews work processes directly related to the ordering and unloading of blank headstones, markers and niche covers, and verification/Inspection of inscription per the Monument Order Acknowledge Report (MOAR). Utilizes computer systems, BOSS (Burial Operating Support System), and related internal applications to monitor, update and document receipt of all markers in BOSS, and verification of markers. Incumbent is responsible for the thorough inspection of each marker completed for quality, inscription accuracy, and depth in accordance with established directives and SOP's. Incumbent examines each marker to verify inscription accuracy using the MOAR (Monuments Ordered Acknowledge Report) continually monitoring achievement of performance goals for timeliness of marking grave sites. The Cemetery Caretaker performs jobs requiring mainly manual skills and physical strength. Performs a variety of tasks, such as operating small tractors and riding lawn mowers; transplanting shrubs; digging graves to the proper level; cutting and removing sod, tamping and leveling dirt using hand and power tools; digging and squaring graves using pneumatic equipment, picks and shovels; assisting in lifting and placing caskets on lowering devices; loading and unloading materials; aligning headstones; cleaning and clearing cemetery grounds of debris using power trimmers, chainsaws, axes, shovels, rakes, blowers, vacuums etc.; weeding, mulching, and applying fertilizer; pruning shrubs and low level dead branches; removing snow and ice; cleaning headstones using sprayer and hand brush; and cleaning service and administrative areas. Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement,04/10/2024. Your background must demonstrate work involved in leading work pertaining to landscaping, grounds keeping, or other related trades experience that includes the use of hand tools and/or power tools, and the safe operation of related machinery and equipment used in cemetery caretaking practices, as described in the duties section of the announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Physical Requirements: Work includes walking, standing, sitting, bending, pulling, lifting, and carrying heavy loads. Moderate to heavy effort is required in performing tasks such as lifting, moving, and lowering objects that weigh above 50 pounds. Work may be performed in confined areas. Moderate effort is required to operate various types of vehicles and equipment. Must use the full range of upper and lower body extremities. Must operate power tools and equipment for extended periods of time. Working Conditions: Work is performed predominantly outdoors, with exposures to all types of environmental factors including rain, sleet, snow, cold, heat, etc. Exposed to moving vehicles and equipment, dirt, dust, mud, pesticides, and fumes from vehicle exhaust. Required to wear personal protective equipment for the task being performed. Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drugs use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
