This position is in the Infectious Diseases Section (IDS) Laboratory, within the Department of Transfusion Medicine (DTM) with the Clinical Center. The Infectious Diseases Section (IDS) Laboratory addresses the diverse needs at NIH by performing research in Cancer virology and Molecular diagnostic. Specifically studying the link between Viral Hepatitis and cancer, as well as focusing on cutting-edge technologies applied to infectious diseases diagnostic.

Duties

As the Supervisory Clinical Laboratory Scientist, your duties will include but are not limited to the following: Performs testing, maintenance and quality control processes in accordance with local SOP's, FDA regulations and other accreditation agencies such as CLIA, AABB, and TJC. Employs safe work practices and uses appropriate personal protective equipment to minimize the potential of hazard exposure or unnecessary contamination of the lab environment and knows the steps to take when a hazardous situation is present. Assists with the evaluation, development, validation and implementation of new equipment, tests or processes. Manages reagent and supplies inventory, rotates stock, and maintains inventory records. Performs other duties, as assigned, to include, but not limited to, participation in special research projects, and developing procedures or training programs for new equipment or processes. Reports test results for the donor center and the clinical center patients.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-0644-12 grade level, if you meet the following qualification requirements: A Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics, AND successful completion of a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. OR A full 4-year course of study that included 12 months in a college or hospital-based medical technology program or medical technology school approved by a recognized accrediting organization. The professional medical technology curriculum may have consisted of a 1-year post- bachelor's certificate program or the last 1 or 2 years of a 4-year program of study culminating in a bachelor's in medical technology. OR A Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from an accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry), one semester (one quarter) of mathematics, AND five years of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, microbiology, Immunology and Urinalysis/Body Fluids. This combination of education and experience must have provided knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of medical technology equivalent to that provided by the full 4-year course of study described in A or B above. All science and mathematics courses must have been acceptable for credit toward meeting the requirements for a science major at an accredited college or university. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Government performing the following types of tasks:Serving as a lead clinical laboratory scientist with responsibility for leading other clinical staff performing laboratory testing (pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases) in accordance with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements in a blood banking/transfusion medicine and clinical setting; participating in the development, evaluation and implementation of new infectious diseases testing methodologies; evaluating the quality of laboratory services and adequacy of equipment, personnel, and working accommodations; planning, implementing, and coordinating quality control programs for a lab performing specialized testing on transfusion transmitted infectious diseases; training others in diagnostic laboratory procedures; and developing guidelines that govern laboratory operations, administrative and other operational support duties.
