This position is located in John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, in the Paleontology Division. Open to the first 50 applicants or until 04/10/2024 whichever comes first. Temporary appointment not-to-exceed one year but may be extended each year without further competition, if you continue to meet the eligibility requirements under the Pathways Internship program and funding is available.

Duties

MAJOR DUTIES: Participates in paleontological excavations and fieldwork. Ensures that notes accompany fieldwork. Consolidates and prepares fossil specimens, adaptively using manual, electrical, and air-powered tools. Assists in the preparation of reports, plans, and guidelines. Drafts project reports which may include literature research, descriptions of methods, preparation of graphs and charts, and summary of findings. Provides information to other employees and visitors about park resources. Colorful rock formations at John Day Fossil Beds preserve a world class record of plant and animal evolution, changing climate, and past ecosystems that span over 40 million years. Exhibits and a working lab at the Thomas Condon Visitor Center, as well as scenic drives and hikes at all three units, allow visitors to explore the prehistoric past of Oregon and see science in action.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by 11:59 PM EST when the applicant limit is reached (which may be sooner than 04/10/2024). Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience includes work in the fields of paleontology, geophysics, archeology/anthropology or geology; assisting with fossil preparation, field work in paleontology, paleontology research, paleontology database management, paleontology monitoring, paleo art, or specimen management of fossils; assisting with natural resources research projects; compiling and analyzing scientific data into reports; operating complex sampling, monitoring, and laboratory equipment; or using computer programs such as databases to compile, store, retrieve, analyze and report resource management data. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one (1) full year of graduate study leading to a Master's degree, Ph.D., or equivalent graduate degree from an accredited educational institution directly related to this position in an appropriate field of science, such as paleontology, archaeology/anthropology, geology, earth science, earth history, biology or other directly related fields. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of an equivalent combination of experience and graduate education such as six months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and half a year of graduate level study in courses directly related to the work of this position (50% of the qualifying education). You must include transcripts and hours per week worked in your resume. A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
