These positions are located within the Readjustment Counseling Service (RCS) Call Center in Lakewood, CO. The Readjustment Counselor Technician is responsible for implementing appropriate assistance and referral strategies, including identifying and providing support to Veterans at high risk and coordinating care.

Duties

Position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-08. At the GS-06 and GS-07 grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-08. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher-level work, and availability of funds.
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Conducts telephone interviews and uses questionnaires or other identified assessment tools to assess emotional, functional, and/or psychological condition;
Conducts initial screenings by completing structured interviews and assessments;
Creates and maintains forms, survey instruments, etc.
Obtains missing information from providers, clients, and medical records;
Provides psycho education and direct advice regarding readjustment issues;
Contacts clients through telephone calls and conducts follow up interviews;
Works collaboratively with other members of the Crisis Hotline Program to identify services for callers and their families;
Assists callers by providing information on programs and services (i.e. medical, clinical benefits or community services)
Performs other duties as needed.
Work Schedule: Sunday - Thursday, 5:00am - 1:30pm or Tuesday - Saturday, 1:00am - 9:00pm
Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the following criteria:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

GS-6 grade level:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in Federal Service that has provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Readjustment Counselor Technician GS-6. Specialized experience includes: answering phones and determining and identifying emergent needs of the caller; providing appropriate information and referral services for immediate crisis response; maintaining accurate records of all contacts based on established policies and procedures; and operating equipment such as computer, phones, hardware, and computer applications. NOTE: Your experience must be fully documented in your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.
OR
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of one-half academic year (6 months) of graduate study in psychology at an accredited college or university OR I have completed a post-bachelor's degree internship that is directly related to the work of this position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcript with your application. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
OR
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: An equivalent combination of education and experience, as described above, which meets the total experience requirements for this position. NOTE: Your experience must be documented in your resume and transcripts are required.
GS-7 grade level:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in Federal Service that has provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Readjustment Counselor Technician GS-7. Specialized experience includes: answering phones and determining and identifying emergent needs of the caller; providing appropriate information and referral services for immediate crisis response; and maintaining accurate records of all contacts based on established policies and procedures experience and familiarity with a variety of treatments and medical terminology; and operating call center equipment such as computer, phones, hardware, and computer applications. NOTE: Your experience must be fully documented in your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of one academic year of graduate study in psychology at an accredited college or university or I have completed a post-bachelor's degree internship that is directly related to the work of this position. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-7) in Federal Service that has provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Readjustment Counselor Technician GS-8. Specialized experience includes: use of knowledge of Veteran, Military personnel and their Families related community, state, national, organizations, and support group resources to determine how to integrate within the community to achieve various patient and family needs; providing Veteran, Military personnel, and their Families psycho-education and direct advice readjustment issue; answering phones and determining and identifying emergent needs of the caller; providing appropriate information and referral services for immediate crisis response; maintaining accurate records of all contacts based on established policies and procedures; experience and familiarity with a variety of treatments and medical terminology; and operating call center equipment such as computer, phones, hardware, and computer applications. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary. The position requires prolonged sitting, standing, moderate walking, and manual dexterity. May require carrying light items such as books, files, laptop computer. Work requires extreme patience and ability to control emotions.
