About the Position: Maintain and repair equipment and facilities. Utilize journeyman-level carpentry and plumbing skills and intermediate level mechanical, electrical, welding, and painting skills. Note: May be required to work overtime in the case of an emergency or natural disaster. Overtime pay laws and rules apply. Relocation and Recruitment incentives may be offered to highly qualified candidates.

Duties

Install, modify and repair a variety of plumbing systems. Perform the most difficult carpentry work within the District involving utilization of skills and techniques required to install, repair or modify wood products. Repair electrical fixtures, defective wiring etc. requiring removal and replacement, splicing, soldering, tightening etc. Voltage is usually from 110 to 240 volts. Repair a variety of industrial equipment by removing, adjusting, or replacing defective parts. Operate motor vehicle equipment in conjunction with maintenance work requirements and delivery or removal of surplus equipment, furniture and other material from projects throughout the District.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This is a key position.
  • A pre-employment and annual Physical is required.
  • Must be First Aid and CPR certified.
  • Possession of or the ability to acquire: 1.) a state driver's license, 2.) a Corps of Engineers boat operator's license and 3.) a Class B Driver's License.
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends depending on the needs of the project to which the employee is assigned.
  • Incumbent is required to work in adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.).
  • Covered under the Department of Army Random Drug Testing program. A pre-employment drug test is required.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. Experience performing common facility maintenance and repair tasks on electrical and mechanical components, equipment, and systems under the normal supervision of a Maintenance Supervisor or Leader who observes tasks in progress and upon completion makes sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Use moderate physical effort in the process of stacking, loading, unloading, moving, and carrying tools and equipment, and materials ranging in weight from 10 lb. to 50 lb. Occasionally required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Work inside and outside and the jobs usually are dirty, dusty, and greasy. Is sometimes required to perform work outside in bad weather and in work areas that are noisy. Is frequently exposed to the possibility of broken bones, burns, cuts, bruises, shocks and strains. Occasionally is required to wear uncomfortable protective clothing.
