You will serve as a ARCHIVIST in the MARINE CORPS HISTORY DIVISION of EDUCATION COMMAND of TRAINING AND EDUCATION COMMAND.

Duties

You will perform appropriate processing on collections received or held within the archive using established processing procedures and appropriate military history knowledge. You will analyze conditions of all material upon acceptance to determine appropriate preservation actions. You will ensure correct long-term storage of all archival holdings sufficient to preserve, for the greatest amount of time, each record in an appropriate storage container. You will work with the archival staff to similarly use the collection to write articles or give presentations highlighting people or events chronicled in the archive. You will digitize documents and provide guidance on the research process of those files. You will facilitate digital access to archival collections by scoping and managing digitization projects, ensuring all collection metadata is current and accurate, managing the digital ingest workflows into the Digital Access Management System. You will provide reference service in response to simple and complex e-mail, phone, fax, and written requests for information.

  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You may be required to lift/carry items up to 50lbs.

Qualifications

GS-09: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate most or all of the following: 1) Collecting, arranging, describing, maintaining, and providing access to archival records; 2) Preserving operational and administrative records including but not limited to: publications, curriculum files, photos film, personal papers, maps, and other collections both digital and non-digital; 3) Digitizing documents to update records and research capabilities into an electronic process; and 4) Coordinates briefings or presentations on archived documents. GS-07: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate most of all of the following: Providing access to archival, operational and administrative records, analyzing the condition of all archival material upon acceptance to determine appropriate preservation actions, and preparing and implementing procedures for disaster prevention, response, and recovery. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess: Basic Requirements:
  1. Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.

    OR

  2. Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Evaluation of Experience:

Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the professional experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law.

In addition to meeting the Basic Education Requirement, the following can be substituted in order to meet the minimum qualification requirements of this position:

GS-09:
You must have successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree;

OR

Successfully completed two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree (https://www.usajobs.gov/Help/working-in-government/unique-hiring-paths/students/ federal-occupations-by-college-major/;)

OR

Have a combination of experience and graduate education as described that equates to one year of experience (the percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience must equal one hundred percent).

GS-07:
You must have successfully completed one full year of graduate level education;

OR

Successfully completed a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement;

OR

Have a combination of experience and education that equates to one year of experience (the percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience must equal one hundred percent).
