This position serves as an Electrician located within the maintenance and repair section at the Memphis VA Medical Center located in Memphis, TN. The incumbent performs the duties of a journeyman electrician under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor.

Duties

The VAMC in Memphis, TN consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a 60-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and nine community-based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center. Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a 53-county tri-state area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi). Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Perform installation, maintenance, and/or repair, modify, maintain, troubleshoot, test and verify loads on new and existing electrical lines, circuits, system and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment. Work on wide range of voltages, (480 volts and below) amperage, phases, and frequency requirements, to distribution panels, switchgear, power and control circuits, Environmental Management Service equipment, Food and Nutrition Service equipment, automatic transfer switches, emergency generators, hospital beds, lighting systems. Incumbent determines and installs distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and install wiring, coupling, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices. Performs other related duties as assigned. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Physical Requirements: Electrical workers at this grade make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. This requires electrical workers him to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Electrical workers frequently lift and carry tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 9 kilograms (20 pounds) and, less often, up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). Occasionally, they lift or move with assistance moderately heavy objects weighing more than 18 kilograms. Working Conditions: The work is performed both inside and outside. Electrical workers are sometimes required to make repairs and installations in bad weather; in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy; on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 9 meters (30 feet) or more; and in close quarters such as manholes, attics, or aboard ships. They are occasionally exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and rotary devices such as electrical motors. They are frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises.
