This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until December 31, 2024. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications and subsequent cut-off dates are on the 1st of each month. Additional duties include, but are not limited to: Dentistry, endodontic, periodontics, space maintainers, oral surgery, Implants, fixed prostheses, and removable prostheses Diagnostic-examination of hard and soft tissue, x-rays, occlusal analysis and oral cancer screenings Developing and implementing treatment plans Restorations of teeth that is viable, using amalgam or composite resin materials Extraction of teeth which are determined a health hazard Emergency care for treatment of acute conditions (i.e. abscesses) Administration of oral hygiene education in conjunction with the oral hygienist, dental coordinator and dental assistant Performing surgical procedures on the teeth, bone and soft tissues of the oral cavity Additional duties as required Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm (Tuskegee) Monday-Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm (Fort Rucker/Fort Novosel)

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Degree of doctor of dental surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:(1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence. NOTE: The Under Secretary for Health or designee in Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a graduate of a school of dentistry not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research or academic position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area. (Also see paragraph 2d(4) below on waiver of licensure provisions.) The Under Secretary for Health or designee may also approve the appointment of a graduate of a school of dentistry not covered above as a resident under 38 U.S.C. 7406. Licensure and Registration: Dentists (Except Residents). Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia. The dentist must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Residency or Comparable Experience: Completion of an approved residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. Residents (Independent and Integrated Programs): Graduates of approved United States and Canadian schools of dentistry must have a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia before the second year of VA residency, or, for integrated programs, meet any licensure, registration or other equivalent requirements established for residents of non-VA hospitals with which the VA facility is affiliated for training purposes. The resident must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active current licensure. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Dentists, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). A staff Dentist must have knowledge in general dentistry to administer dental treatment to include evaluations. prophylaxis, radiograghs, dental health education, fluoride treatments. sealants, composite and amalgam restorations, crowns, extractions, some endodontic and simple periodontics procedures. Staff dentist will provide clinical guidance including patient treatment, four-handed dentistry, infection control, OSHA guidelines, x-rays, oral health education, knowledge and education of HIPPA/security regulations and incompliance with VHA policy. Proficiency and productivity in all areas of General Dentistry including restorative, prosthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, and oral surgery. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-3 Dentist Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be able to light lifting under 15 pound and light carrying less than 15 pounds. Straight pulling, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, standing 4 hours, repeated bending, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13' to 16' to Jaeger I t o 4. Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, depth perception, ability to distinguish shades of colors, and hearing (aid permitted}.

Education
