The Atlanta VAHCS Surgical Technician works with the surgeon, anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist, and registered nurse as a member of the direct patient care team before, during and following surgical intervention. He/she functions as the primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies and equipment during all surgical procedures.

Duties

Duties include but may not be limited to the following: Reviewing surgery schedules to determine and arrange availability of specialized instruments, equipment, and implants. Ensuring completeness and accuracy of needed equipment, instruments and supplies. Properly assembling and testing delicate instruments to ensure optimal functioning. Cleaning and disinfecting instruments; Preparing, organizing and maintaining highly complex sterile surgical set-ups. Receiving tissue specimen and cultures for laboratory analysis and ensuring circulating nurse receives correct information for labeling purposes. Independently connecting drains and tubing; Independently preparing and applying sterile dressings following procedures; Providing teaching and technical expertise to student OR technicians and medical residents on their OR rotation. Sharing responsibility with anesthesia/circulating nurse for preparing and identifying fluids and drugs for intra-operative use. Perform other duties as assigned by management. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: preparing and organizing highly complex sterile surgical set-ups, providing direct assistance to the surgeon, alerting other medical personnel of potentially dangerous surgical occurrences, and independently preparing and applying sterile dressings following procedure(s), utilizing knowledge of medical instruments, human anatomy, physiology, and aseptic technique to prepare and protect sterile field during surgery; exercising sterile technique to include sterilizer operations and tests to determine the effectiveness of sterilization, packaging, storage, and shelf life; handling medical instruments, supplies and equipment during all surgical procedures; performing proper cleaning techniques, as well as the proper handling and rotation of sterile supplies; handling contaminated items, quality control, and personal hygiene, using knowledge of universal precautions and implementing infection control policies and procedures. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-XX. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Preferred Qualifications: Current, recent experience working as a Surgical Technician that demonstrates knowledge of current practices, techniques, and medical competence. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Physical and mental stamina are required, the duties involve frequently working under considerable stress, tense (sometimes life-threatening) situations and with patients who are in a sedated state with loss of orientation. The work involves long, strenuous hours of standing, stooping, bending, and stretching without a break during procedures that require intense concentration. The work also involves frequent lifting to position or transport handicapped or anesthetized patients and requires strenuous physical exertion and agility. Manual dexterity and agility are required to correctly assemble, test, or repair instruments. Strain is incurred in staying alert on long cases under difficult situations. Scheduled for on-call for emergency procedures on a rotation basis, including holidays and weekends. Expected to respond, if reached, for life-threatening emergency, even when not on-call. Expected to stay beyond shift if more than two rooms are running beyond 3:30pm.
