Incumbent will be assigned to the Plumbing Shop at the Stratton VA Medical Center, Albany, New York.
Duties
The Maintenance Mechanic Leader receives work assignments from the utility systems repairer/operator supervisor in the form of written, oral instructions that may be accompanied by shop drawings or schematics.
The work involves ensuring and demonstrating proper work methods for installing, modifying, repairing and maintaining new and existing high, medium and low-pressure stream piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, condensate, vacuum, circulating pumps and radiators.
In addition to installing, modifying, repairing new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, natural gas distribution systems as well as piped medical gas systems including medical air, vacuum, oxygen, and nitrous oxide.
Incumbent will lead a work group consisting of 2 WG-10 Maintenance Mechanics and/or and one WG-8 Utility Systems Repairer/Operator.
Incumbent serves as a work leader at the journeyman level in the repairs of facility-wide plumbing and piping systems.
The work involves installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems.
Repairs equipment such as sewage, water, oil and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs.
Incumbent also repairs hot and cold water piping systems including that which is used for sinks, showers, tubs and water closets throughout the medical center.
Incumbent serves as a work leader at the journeyman level in the installation of facility wide plumbing and high pressure steam and condensate systems.
Work involves installing and modifying systems by locating and tapping main lines, setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper level and slope.
Determines and installs valves, traps, and unions needed for proper operation of systems.
Installs equipment by completing the routing and placement of systems leading to the equipment, and seating, hooking up, and testing the equipment.
Incumbent also serves as a work leader at the journeyman level for the preventive maintenance of inhouse facility-wide plumbing systems including fire suppression systems, hot and cold potable water systems.
Incumbent serves as a work leader at the journeyman level to install, modify, repair, and maintain high temperature water and high-pressure piping systems such as hydraulic, nitrogen, oxygen, steam heating, and steam-generating systems.
Installs and repairs such items as steam generators, vacuum, air, water, and condensate pumps, radiators, automatic and manual valves and flash and expansion tanks.
Piping systems include water, natural gas, high/medium/low pressure steam and condensate, medical gases, compressed air, heating and cooling, sewer, fire protection, irrigation, and ionized water.
Sets up system routes, places and cuts route openings, installs regulating devices, and places hangers for proper pitch and elevation.
Determines and installs risers, flexible branches, expansion joints, pumps, gauges, and pressure regulators in the combination needed to support the pressures of the systems and ensure the proper operation of the systems.
Reads and interprets blueprints, layout sketches, manufacturers' literature and specifications for sizing, estimating, installing and repairing new or existing piping systems.
Replaces sections of pipe, repairs steam traps and relief and control valves.
Cuts, threads, and connects pipes by means of union, flanges, and sweating.
Fits pipe sections by screwing, bolting, brazing, gluing, fusing, soldering, and caulking connections by forcing oakum and molten lead into joints.
Tests systems and equipment for proper operation, circulation, flow, pressure and leak-free joints.
Traces and troubleshoots pipelines, systems and equipment to locate and repair leaks and trouble spots.
Performs safety and preventive maintenance inspections of systems and equipment. Incumbent provides minimal repairs, maintenance and installations to fire sprinkler systems.
Incumbent serves as a refrigeration equipment mechanic to install, modify and repair refrigeration piping and associated piping and support systems.
Piping systems include copper brazed refrigeration piping, copper and/or steel condensate lines of various sizes. Perform other assigned duties.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent will perform duties in a modern plant and facility. There is continuous noise from equipment and machinery. The incumbent may be required to work in confined spaces, climb ladders and scaffolding, stand for extended periods of time, excessive walking and crawling may be required. Incumbent will be expected to work outside in inclement weather when necessary and work on or near high temperature machinery and equipment. Workers are subject to dirty, greasy and wet work environments. Workers are also subject to handling and working around hot steam piping and may come in contact with such piping, which could cause burns. Workers are also subject to cuts, abrasions and scratches while working around equipment.
Maintenance Mechanic leader is required to work in confined areas in and around boilers, air handling units and support equipment. The work requires moderate to strenuous efforts and long periods of walking, climbing, crouching and bending. Incumbent frequently hurries to address emergencies to avoid the possibility of loss of steam header pressure or utility outages. Incumbent is also exposed to light to strenuous effort in turning valves and operating controls, occasional stacking and moving machinery parts for dismantling and inspecting machinery. Workers frequently carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 lbs. unassisted, occasionally items weighing over 40 lbs. with the assistance of weight-lifting equipment and/or other workers.
