Salary: $50 326 - 80 510 per year

The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland's (USAO-MD) mission is to enforce and defend the laws of the United States of America through the prosecution of criminal cases brought by the Federal government; the prosecution and defense of civil cases in which the United States is a party; and the collection of debts owed to the Federal government that are administratively uncollectible.

Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing legal support in the U.S. Attorney's Office (USAO), District of Maryland, located in Baltimore, Maryland, focusing in the areas of grand jury activities. This position serves as USAO Grand Jury Coordinator and legal assistant responsible for supporting Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) by providing assistance related to grand jury actions and matters. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex, as your training and experience progresses. Typical work assignments will include: Assisting AUSAs in complex grand jury matters. Managing paper and electronic documents and evidence, correspondence, briefs, witness interviews, and other documentary materials. Assisting with preparing and organizing evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial. Providing administrative assistance related to grand jury actions, matters, and services.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience for the respective grade level for which you are applying: To qualify at the GS-06 level, you must possess: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-05 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors) performing, at minimum, (3) of the (4) duties listed below: Assisting in the preparation of legal documents such as search warrants, grand jury subpoenas, summonses, indictments, criminal complaints, and/or judgments. Assisting with trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, compiling witness and exhibit lists, and/or developing courtroom presentations. Tracking filings, hearing and trial dates to schedule conferences and interviews. Responding to inquiries by telephone, mail, and/or in person concerning pending and closed matters and cases, and/or legal administrative procedures. To qualify at the GS-07 level, you must possess: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-06 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors) performing, at minimum, (3) of the (4) duties listed below: Assisting in the preparation of legal documents such as search warrants, grand jury subpoenas, summonses, indictments, criminal complaints, and/or judgments. Assisting with searches for legal precedent including listing cited cases, opinions, and/or references in briefs. Contributing to reports summarizing the case status including legal and factual issues, and case developments. Coding and indexing discovery documents using legal case management software. To qualify at the GS-08 level, you must possess: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-07 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors) performing, at minimum, (3) of the (4) duties listed below: Providing training, guidance, and/or technical assistance related to grand jury policy and procedures to other legal staff. Participating in developing orientation materials for new grand jurors that includes guidance explaining proceedings, evidentiary and testimony rules and courtroom roles and activities. Compiling and editing data for grand jury reports. Maintaining calendar of grand jury activities. Typing Proficiency: To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)
