The primary purpose of this position is to provide a variety of clinical laboratory services by performing standardized tests and examinations of human tissues, fluids and other substances. The work ecompasses the specialized areas of Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Banking and Urinalysis. This position is location in the Clinical Labatories in Chinle, Arizona.

Duties

NOTE: This position is being announced concurrently with announcement IHS-24-CH-12285189-ESEP/MP for candidates at the GS-06/07 level, please review vacancy announcement for eligibility requirements. Applicants must apply separately for each announcement in order to be considered for each grade level. Perform waived and moderately complexity clinical laboratory procedures used in clinical diagnosis under supervision of high-grade personnel. Performs tests such as urine pregnancy testing, urinalysis examinations, sedimentation rate, rapid respiratory testing, and loading specimens on automated analyzers. Sets up bacterial cultures following laboratory procedures. Operates and maintains clinical laboratory equipment ranging from simple to complex. Performs required quality assurance procedures, as assigned. Collects, process, and delivers specimens for analysis. Processes reference lab reports for scanning.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): GS-04: 6 months of general experience AND 6 months of specialized experience that has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This specialized experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-03 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples Include: Under the supervision of a higher-grade personnel: perform basic lab testing such as Urine, hCG, FLU, and/or RSV testing; accept and process patient lab orders while adhering to laboratory guidelines & procedures; observe & learn from other higher-grade personnel on how to set up microbiology cultures; maintain laboratory equipment & supplies. GS-05: 1 year of specialized experience that has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This specialized experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples Include: Collect blood samples from patients while adhering to phlebotomy policy & procedures; performs reference lab report for scanning or manually keying patient test result into electronic health record; perform urine microscopic examinations; loading specimen on laboratory analyzers; performs maintenance procedures on simple clinical laboratory equipment (Ex: DCA2000). SUBSTITUTING EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: For GS-4: Successful completion of (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of the training course as described in (a) above for GS-3; or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled. For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. Individual Occupational Requirement: For positions at GS-4 and above: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
