This position is located at the Rocky Mountain Coordination Center (RMCC); Fire and Aviation Management; Lakewood, CO. The incumbent provides interagency program management, conducts evaluations, develops new fire weather products, and provides advocacy and liaison for wildland fire agencies in the fire weather arena. Duties

Serves as the Fire Weather Meteorologist for the Geographic Area ensuring the continued availability and adequacy of the operational aspects of the fire weather infrastructure within the Geographic Area. Provides advice and consultation to the Geographic Area Coordinating Group concerning fire weather systems issues. Serves as the lead for the Fire Danger Rating System within the Geographic Area. Ensures preparation and delivery of various weather and climatological products and services including assessments, weather and climatological discussions, summaries, and reports, both routine and non-routine. Manages weather and climatology related portions of Coordination Center Internet web site.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. Your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. All applicants must meet the basic education requirement for their discipline: GS-1340: MINIMUM BASIC EDUCATION: Degree Requirement: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included: At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of: Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;* Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale); Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.* Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.* At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science. * There is a prerequisite or corequisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major. OR Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to the requirements described above, the following additional experience and/or education for the grade(s) specified is required. For the GS-13 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level. Examples of specialized experience include: Issuing fire weather forecasts and warnings for wildfires, prescribe burns, herbicide spraying, hazardous spills, pesticide spraying, wildland and wilderness management; Assisting Agency as well as National Weather Service personnel in development of and provided training for fire management agency courses that included instruction of basic meteorology, weather observations, smoke management, forecasts, warnings, and other services. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
