About the Position: The Big Bend Project is located in central South Dakota in a rural area along the Missouri River. The work is near Fort Thompson, SD between Crow Creek and Lower Brule Indian Reservations. The majority of our staff live in or near Chamberlain, SD with a commuting distance 20-30 miles. Other nearby communities include Highmore, Reliance, and Oacoma, SD

Duties

Reads and understands electrical, electronic, and mechanical drawings including schematics, connection and flow diagrams, Makes corrections to installation drawings to show as built and operational conditions. Knowledge of high voltage electrical equipment and technical practices associated with the operation and maintenance of a hydroelectric power plant, switchyard and its associated water control structures. Has a working knowledge of the National Electrical Code and its applications. Understands power plant safety rules and regulations. Recognizes work situations where appropriate clothing and/or protective equipment is required to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions. Basic computer skills to create and use spreadsheets, effectively communicate electronically, use specialized programs to plan, execute maintenance and track resource use.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This is a mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing Designated Position (TDP), in accordance with ER 690-1-1218, USACE Civilian Drug Free Workplace Program, dated 30 June 2021. Participation in the Mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing Program is required.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's license (CDL).

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Power Plant Senior Electrician without more than normal supervision. Power Plant Senior Electrician: I have the ability to perform common shop calculations using math, algebra and geometry, and trigonometry. With normal supervision I install, troubleshoot, test, and repair electrical equipment. I maintain a wide variety of electrical equipment such as those found in switchyards, power plants, commercial facilities, and/or industrial facilities. I have a good understanding of practical electrical knowledge from direct experience and/or technical schooling - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility To Use and Maintain Hand Tools (Electrical Work)Ability To Use Electrical DrawingsKnowledge of Electrical EquipmentTechnical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)Theory and Instruments (Electrical Electronic) Used in Shop and Trade PracticesTrouble shooting (electrical) Physical Effort: Work requires being on your feet most of the time with considerable bending and stooping depending on the equipment being worked on. Significant periods of time are spent kneeling in cramped quarters. Requires heavy lifting (up to 45lbs.), wire pulling and some climbing. Also working from aerial bucket truck on deenergized circuits. Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily inside the power plant, often in close quarters and in cramped positions. Work with and around high voltage currents, subject to electrical shock with possibly lethal results. Is subject to cuts, burns, bruises from working with electrical hand and power tools. Constant noise and vibration of generating equipment makes concentration extremely difficult. Occasionally exposed to hot and cold temperatures when working outdoors in switchyards, intake structures and spillways and outside electrical distribution systems.
