These positions are located in National Capital Parks-East, in the National Capital Parks - East (NACE) Division. The purpose of interpretation is to enrich people's lives through meaningful experiences and enjoyable recreation; preserve and protect natural and cultural resources through broad collaboration and shared stewardship; and inspire social and environmental consciousness to build community and sustain the health of the planet.

Duties

The major duties of the Park Ranger (Interpretive) position include, but are not limited to, the following: Interpretation and Communication- develop and deliver formal programs, informal visitor contact, and digital media. Visitor Services- coordinates daily operation of Visitor Center, volunteer programs, etc. Training- training, mentoring, coaching, and evaluating a broad range of interpretive programs. Education- develop and deliver in-park, off-site, and/or virtual education programs that tie NPS resources to education standards. Safety- promotes personal, visitor, and staff safety by including risk assessments in all decisions and actions. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-04/10/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. To qualify for the Park Ranger (Interpretation) position at the GS-7 grade, you must meet the following minimum qualifications by the closing date of this announcement: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience must include all of: Coordinate (under guidance of a supervisor) education programs. Develop in-park, off-site, and virtual education programs that tie park resources to national, state, and local standards. Track, report and analyze visitor use statistics to improve visitor services and programs. Assist in coordinating special projects, such as special events, youth initiatives, teacher workshops, and regional committees, at all stages. Provide world class customer service to all visitors, staff, volunteers, contractors, partners, and stakeholders. -OR- EDUCATION: 1 full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation or superior academic achievement-OR-Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include your resume with hours worked per week annotated, as well as transcripts. To qualify for the Park Ranger (Interpretation) position at the GS-9 grade, you must meet the following minimum qualifications by the closing date of this announcement: SPECIALZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience must include all of: Develop and present formal and informal audience and learner centered programs. Engage with local communities and collaborate with park partners, stakeholders, and youth to expand delivery of programs and services for mutual benefit. Coordinate (under guidance of a supervisor) education programs. Train, mentor, coach and evaluate interpretive programs and products conducted by lower graded staff and volunteers. Foster a culture of safety in the workplace, conduct safety walk-throughs and report all accidents and near misses within appropriate time frames. Develop in-park, off-site, and virtual education programs that tie park resources to national, state, and local standards. Develop daily work schedules that include tours of duty and location of assignments for the supervisor's approval. Support implementation of partnership networks to meet park objectives. Track report and analyze visitor use statistics to improve visitor services and programs. Assist in coordinating special projects, such as special events, youth initiatives, teacher workshops, and regional committees, at all stages. Provide world class customer service to all visitors, staff, volunteers, contractors, partners, and stakeholders. -OR- EDUCATION: 2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the occupation. You must include transcripts.-OR-Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include your resume with hours worked per week annotated, as well as transcripts. NOTE: Then take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts. You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Promotion to the full performance level is neither guaranteed nor implied and will be based solely on your ability to satisfactorily perform the work of the position, existing work at the higher grade level, and recommendation by the position's supervisor. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster. This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
