About the Position: As a Safety Technician, performs a wide variety of assignments to support the NWS District safety mission, to verify regulations for safety are met, and to preserve the health and well-being of the Seattle district employees and stakeholders.
Duties
Collects data from a wide range of work processes and circumstances for analysis by higher graded safety specialists.
Performs inspections, investigations and conducts surveys.
Works with safety specialists and other district safety office personnel to resolve safety issues.
Oversees District evacuation plans and annual rehearsals to educate and exercise employees on quick and orderly egress during an emergency.
Oversees and reports on a variety of standard and recurring programs to maintain employee safety and health.
Provides formal and informal training of employees by covering a variety of standard, general safety and occupational health subjects.
Recommends changes to work plans, trade practices, and operating procedures in the area of safety and occupational health.
Ensures regulatory compliance and the safety and health of affected personnel by overseeing, monitoring, and inspecting facilities, equipment, and work processes.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Position requires wearing personal protective equipment, as appropriate.
- Obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license to conduct site visits.
- Position requires a pre-employment physical to include use of respirator and annual physical examination and may require participation in the medical surveillance program.
- This is a Career Program CP-12 Position, successful completion of required training for this Safety career program position is required to be obtained within one year after being appointed.
- TDY is up to 40% to conduct site visits.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. For the GS-07 Grade Level:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes identifying or preventing safety hazards in a workplace and/or environmental conditions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
OR
Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Occupational Safety and Health, Construction Safety, or Industrial Hygiene. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
For the GS-08 Grade Level:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes identifying or preventing safety hazards in a workplace and/or environmental conditions; AND collecting data on safety conditions of the workplace or assisting with accident or incident reports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
OR
Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Occupational Safety and Health, Construction Safety, or Industrial Hygiene. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
For the GS-09 Grade Level:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Providing training about general safety and occupational health subjects such as mishap prevention, office safety or safe working practices; AND 2) conducts safety surveys or inspections of buildings, equipment areas or work sites; AND 3) creating accident and incident reports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For the GS-09 grade level you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Time in Grade Requirement for GS-07: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
Time in Grade Requirement for GS-08: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
Time in Grade Requirement for GS-09: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-08).
Education
