About the Position: Serves as a Deck Equipment Operator aboard a derrickbarge or cranebarge displacing 175 to 1100 tons engaged in waterway maintenance on the Great Lakes.

Duties

Operate air motor pump, diesel operated electric generator, and welder. Assist Crane or Derrick Barge Master or Crane Operator in making repairs to the pumps, air compressor capstans and spud winches, generators, ballast systems, welder, diesel or hydraulic operated crane and other machinery and equipment. Handle mooring lines and wire ropes in making up tows and for docking plant. Assist with maintenance and operation of marine construction crane attachments to include pile driving hammers, clamshell buckets, rock grapples, and pile handling devices. Operate the throttle and braking systems on pneumatically operated spud engines which manipulate the spuds to hold the vessel in position. Operate small motorboats to transport personnel and supplies in accordance with USACE and USCG requirements. Use tape measures, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring tools to properly implement repairs. Observe weather conditions, forecasts and other weather indicators to determine the safety of travel. Assist in a variety of preventative maintenance and repair tasks on the derrick barge, and crane.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is covered by the Civilian Drug Abuse Testing Program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified as Critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical exam due to the physical requirements of the position.
  • This position requires Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) up to 25%-75% of the duty time.
  • Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid State motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a 3rd party issued Qualified Rigger and Signal Person credentials meeting OSHA requirements.

I follow safety and health requirements for operations abroad vessel, preventive maintenance checks and services of deck equipment and safely operate all deck equipment.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.Knowledge of MaterialsUse of Measuring Instruments RESPONSIBILITY Receives oral directives from crane operator and overall supervision from the Master. Follows written or established procedures and proper signals in performing routine assignments. Is responsible for the operation, repair, and maintenance of all deck equipment on board. Follow applicable safety regulations. Work is evaluated in terms of efficient, safe, and skillful operation. MENTAL APPLICATION Substantial mental effort is required for the performance of work involving nonrepetitive operations which require choices to be made in recognizing which operations are required by the work situation, that thought be given to deciding the sequence in which operations must be performed, and that mental attention be given to performing these -tasks and operations. PHYSICAL DEMAND Work requires walking, bending, reaching, and standing for prolonged periods, while turning or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate equipment. Moderate physical effort is exerted in accomplishing tasks. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed on derrickbarge or cranebarge deck or in cabin in all weather. Work may be required in cramped machinery spaces, and incumbent is subject to the dangers of fire, explosion or drowning in the event of collision or accident.
