This position is located in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, in the Science and Resource Division.
This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of 10 years, or based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
Duties
The Fish Biologist is responsible for program development and implementation dealing with the management and protection of aquatic and fishery resources and their habitat requirements. The incumbent will be hired to work on a funded project involving monitoring, surveillance, suppression and rapid response to warm water, non-native fish species in the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam in Glen Canyon. Major duties of the position are:
- Develop a scientific rigorous sampling plan that involves both passive and active fish sampling techniques.
- Mechanical removal of non-native fish species.
- Boat operation in swift water environments (often at night).
- Retrieve, compile data and write technical reports.
- Present findings to federal and state agencies along with other stakeholders.
- Maintain a fisheries database including GIS databases.
- Supervision of field personnel, procuring equipment, preventative equipment maintenance, and ensuring all operations are conducted in a safe manner.

Individual Occupational Basic Requirements (Screen-Out)
To meet the basic requirements for Fish Biology series 0482, you must possess one of the following basic qualifications by close of the announcement.
Degree: major in biological science that included:
At least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; and
At least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields. (Excess course work in aquatic subjects may be used to meet this requirement when appropriate.)
or
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours were in the animal sciences, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: providing advisory expertise to support to fishery resource programs and projects; designing, planning and leading fishery surveys to collect and portray a variety of scientific information; significantly and substantively participating in the planning and implementation of scientific studies and projects in fishery management, such as at a level equivalent to a project leader that is broadly and specifically familiar with all aspects of project planning, data collection, applicable protocols, data analysis, reporting, and elements necessary to meet project objectives. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least TWO years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree (for example, fisheries biology, aquatic ecology, natural resource management, or other directly related subject matter). You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Only graduate credits in excess of 1st year (18 semester credits) of graduate school is applicable. For example: 6 months of specialized experience such as above, (50% of the required specialized experience) and 27 semester credits of appropriate graduate study (50% of graduate credits towards 2nd year of graduate school) equal 100 percent. You must include transcripts.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
