This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, Coast Guard Academy, Facilities Engineering Branch, Public Works Section, New London, CT.

Duties

You would serve as a steam plant operator, performing preventative and routine maintenance, diagnosing malfunctions, performing tests, and analyzing results on a variety of equipment. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.  Typical work assignments include:- Operating dual fuel boiler, natural gas/#2 fuel fired boilers.- Taking established pressure and temperature readings, operating pumps, burners and manual or automatic controls to supply 90 PSI steam pressure.- Making scheduled and unscheduled rounds, checking condensate systems, feed pump systems, fuel oil system, chemical feed systems, air systems, and water in emulsifier systems.- Making frequent checks of water levels, water temperatures, fuel oil temperatures, and burner operation.- Repairing and maintaining large air conditioning systems that perform a variety of functions.- Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility supply and disposal systems and equipment. 

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Applicant is required to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Rotating shift work is required.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • The position requires a valid state driver's license.

Qualifications

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired.- ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION (SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT).- KNOWLEDGE OF EQUIPMENT ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION, REPAIR, ETC.- OPERATION OF BOILER PLANT EQUIPMENT.- TECHNICAL PRACTICES (THEORETICAL, PRECISE, ARTISTIC).- USE OF MEASURING INSTRUMENTS.- ABILITY TO INTERPRET INSTRUCTIONS, SPECIFICATION, ETC. (OTHER THAN BLUEPRINT READING).- DEXTERITY AND SAFETY.Qualifying experience includes journeyman level work performing routine and preventative maintenance on boilers and associated equipment. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
