The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a crew chief and technical authority, having custody of an assigned aircraft, with primary responsibility for performing, coordinating, and/or overseeing the maintenance and periodic inspections to the assigned aircraft.
Duties
Serves as crew chief of assigned aircraft, responsible for performing, coordinating, and/or overseeing
maintenance on the aircraft.
Performs aircraft inspections including preflight, postflight, phase, and other scheduled and unscheduled
inspections.
Diagnoses and identifies probable locations of malfunctions from the cockpit during engine run-up.
Initiates requests for unscheduled tools, equipment, and materials during preparation for flight.
Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a
safe and clean work area.
Works to achieve and support quality improvement in all products and services.
Requirements

- Males must be registered for Selective Service, see www.sss.gov
- May be required to work overtime, rotating shifts, uncommon tours, weekends, etc. The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license may be required.
- The employee must be proficient in all aspects of engine run-up. Must also be trained to ride brakes, give hand signals, and watch wings of aircraft being towed; defuel and refuel aircraft; and operate powered ground equipment
- The employee must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance. This position requires the employee to occasionally travel away from the normal duty station.
- This posn is subject to provisions of the DoD Priority Placement Program
- This position requires that the employee be certified in the use of a respirator
- This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.
- The physical requirements of this position as determined by the manager are: The work requires moderate to strenuous effort. Must climb, bend, stoop, crawl, and stand for prolonged periods on concrete or metal surfaces.
- Disclosure of Political Appointments
- Frequently lifts parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh about 50 pounds with mechanical lifting devices or with assistance from others workers.
- The work requires moderate to strenuous effort. Must climb, bend, stoop, crawl, and stand for prolonged periods on concrete or metal surfaces.
- Work is performed in hanger areas, outdoors, in parked aircraft, and sometimes in hazardous noise areas. Exposed to extremes in heat, cold, and inclement weather.
- Must work in confined areas and in awkward positions. Exposed to dirt, grease, and aircraft fluids, oil, hydraulic fluid, solvents, and hazardous fluids and gases such as Hydrazine and Halon.
- Subject to cuts, bruises, muscle strain, and injury from falls off scaffolds, ladders, and aircraft surfaces. May be exposed to intake suction and hot exhaust blast.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8800 Aircraft Overhaul Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is you must be able to perform the duties of this job without more than normal supervision.
