This Career Seasonal Biologist position is engaged in the study, inventory, monitoring, restoration, and management of a broad range of natural resources primarily wildlife management. Duties

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work approximately 11 months per year from late April to mid April the following year. You will be placed in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. The major duties of the Biologist position include, but are not limited to, the following: Implement well-designed monitoring and research of Yellowstone's wildlife populations and perform rigorous statistical analyses and modeling to support the following objectives: monitor wolf, cougar, and elk demographics and estimate population trajectories; evaluate ecosystem processes, food web dynamics, and biodiversity over time related to predator-prey dynamics; monitor genetics and diseases of carnivores; monitor spatial-temporal movements of carnivores and their prey. Work with program lead to coordinate, develop, and manage carnivore and ungulate program, including oversight of seasonal and daily field activities of technicians. Fit a representative sample of carnivores and their prey with telemetry collars and assess age, body condition, diseases, pregnancy status, survival, and causes of death. Design and implement noninvasive monitoring programs including remote camera stations, bioacoustic monitoring devices, and noninvasive genetic survey techniques. Lessen the habituation of wolves to people through education about proper food storage, viewing distances, and aversive conditioning when necessary. Prepare management and scientific reports regarding the results of monitoring and research activities for park managers, cooperators, partners, and scientists. Maintain field equipment, telemetry tracking collars, and supplies, including the inventory, ordering, and purchasing, ensuring proper maintenance, and tracking of controlled property. Conduct aerial observation and telemetry monitoring flights in small fixed-wing aircraft in mountainous terrain while recording data, including carnivore, ungulate, and beaver surveys. Perform ground telemetry monitoring and behavioral observations of carnivores and ungulates. Perform field necropsies of carnivores, ungulates, and other prey species to determine cause of death and conduct genetic and disease sampling. Conduct wildlife captures that may include both on the ground backcountry captures (cougars and ungulates) and aerial helicopter captures (wolves and ungulates). Use topographic maps, compass, or GPS navigation units to navigate rough, mountainous, off-trail terrain in all seasons. Hike, ski, and/or snowshoe up to 15 miles a day in all types of weather while carrying back with equipment, tools, or supplies up to 40 pounds. Make sound, well informed, and objective decisions while representing an agency and when collaborating with other agencies, stakeholders, academic institutions, and non-government organizations, including public outreach and education. Provide conservation recommendations based on understanding of predator-prey and multi-carnivore dynamics. Assist with Yellowstone compliance under Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act for by contributing to biological assessments for listed species for USFWS consultations. Work with communications specialists to provide educational presentations and information on resources to the public and scientific community. Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time. Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-04/05/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position performs capturing, handling and performing chemical immobilization on large mammals. Basic Requirements for General Natural Resources Management and Biological Science Series, 0401: A. A degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. B. Or a combination of education and experience, courses equivalent to a major in biological sciences, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Developed and implemented aspects of research and monitored projects in wildlife biology or management; prepared action plans pertaining to the wildlife management and protection of natural resources; recorded, collected, and analyzed scientific data pertaining to wildlife population and ecological dynamics; utilized specialized software and statistical tests for biological patterns and assisted in writing scientific reports; delivered formal and informal public information, presentations related to wildlife conservation. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree (coursework directly related to position being filled). You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.). You must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
