The Electronics Mechanic has the technical responsibility to work on complex electronic systems characterized by application of advanced electronic theory to installation, rebuild, repair, calibrate, align, test, troubleshoot, and perform root cause/fault analysis of complex integrated electronic systems incorporated throughout the Lexington VAMC.

Duties

Major duties include but not limited to: Uses a broad knowledge of electronic principles, troubleshooting skills and background previous learned to overcome a lack of developed documentation and unique subsystem integration. Exercises significant judgment and independence in determining the methods and techniques required to solve complex system maintenance and repair problems. Responsibilities performed by this position on integrated systems and subsystems, include but are not limited to Fire Alarm major system; networked multi-cast trunked line radio system major system, radio paging system, Code 500 System Code Blue major System; an integrated nurse call system, and complex security systems. Acts as first responder to all electronics systems' issues on the supported systems; however, some systems may be maintained under contract; and, very complex or proprietary issues may require contractor support to solve/fix. Exercises judgment and independence in determining solutions for, installation, programming, modifying, repair, and maintenance of problems which are complicated by the interactions of the various complex systems and subsystems so that the cause of an observable malfunction may be in some other area of the system and changes made in one area will have a direct effect on other remote portions of the system, other systems, or subsystems. Performs or oversees preventive maintenance inspections and follow-up work as required by current performance standards. Furnishes technical advice and works with other engineering personnel in solving problems that arise in the electronic systems throughout the facilities. Assists the projects and planning department in the construction, planning, design, and detailing of new electronic installations or expansions of present systems. Uses a variety of electronic test equipment in diagnosing problems and faults in the various systems. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/11/2024. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent will be exposed to working conditions that will require them to be physically fit. This includes lifting heavy fixtures, bending conduit, climbing ladders, bending, stooping, working in cramped places for extended periods of time and often working in very hot or cold areas. The person must work at times in poorly ventilated areas under strenuous conditions. The incumbent studies manuals, guides, schematics, codes and other publications and takes training courses in order to keep current and abreast of changes in the field. The person must be familiar with VA, OHSA, JCAHO, and NFPA-70E safety regulations and procedures to prevent injury to their self and others. The person adheres to rules and regulation pertaining to working hours, leave, breaks, lunch periods and other specified requirements set forth by the VAMC.
