This position is in the Transportation Section of the Engineering Service at the Birmingham VA Medical Center, Birmingham, AL. You will be responsible for operating various automotive vehicles, including passenger cars, vans, patient transport vans, ambulances, panel trucks, pick-up trucks, cargo vans, trucks, ambulances, and buses.

Duties

NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 2 years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4 year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. Your duties can include but are not limited to the following: Operates a variety of vehicles with approximate gross vehicle weight that exceeds weight class of 26,001 pounds and that can be equipped with or without air brakes; Operates vehicles that carry more than 16 passengers; Picks up and delivers patients, employees, as well as other items such as charts, mail, laboratory specimens, linens, pharmaceuticals, supplies, etc.; Assists accompanying medical personnel in loading, unloading and securing patients; Checks material loaded or delivered against various documents to prevent errors and to certify the condition of items; Determines route to be followed, taking into consideration such factors as ongoing hospital activities, weight limitations, and safety conditions; Assures vehicle is not overloaded; Performs required operator maintenance; Maintains service records, completes delivery records, trip tickets, and compiles accident reports; Loads and unloads crated equipment, supplies, and parts from vehicles; Performs other duties as assigned. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Loads and unloads cargo and directs seating arrangements of passengers, assist in lifting and carrying supplies hauled and arranges loads in the vehicle to provide proper weight distribution for safety. Is required to lift and push heavy articles while loading and unloading cargo. Requires reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot control of vehicles. Moderate effort is required in the frequent handling of objects up to and occasionally more than 50 pounds while loading and unloading cargo. Assists and loads wheelchair and stretcher patients in and out of patient transport vehicles. The work requires operating vehicles under various weather and road conditions, on highways and streets in all kinds of weather often for extended periods of time on long trips. May be called back to work after working hour or on weekends to make emergency trips. May be exposed to blood and other potentially infectious materials that may contain blood borne pathogens.
