The Oklahoma City VA Medical Center, PMRS Service, is currently recruiting for one (1) Supervisory Recreation Therapist in Oklahoma City, OK.

Duties

There are three primary program management roles and responsibilities of this position: Clinical, Education and Administrative responsibilities. Clinical Responsibilities: The Supervisory Recreation Therapist duties include management of the clinical aspects of the section. Incumbent is required to provide overall clinical supervision to assure the proper coordination and delivery of care within the section and the facility at large. The incumbent is responsible for the supervision, leadership, administrative management, and direction of the Recreation Therapy Section of a level 1 facility. The clinical duties include, but are not limited to: Manage the day-to-day operations of the Therapeutic Recreation Section. Supervise and assign workload to staff for delivery and/or support of treatment and education of patients, families, and caregivers. Maintain a consult management process, to ensure consults are acted upon timely and accurately per the current National, VISN and local policies. Coordination of care for the inpatient (Rehab, Community Living Center, Acute Care Mental Health, Gero-Psych, and Medicine) and outpatient settings (Outpatient Therapeutic Recreation clinics, Outpatient Mental Health, Primary Care, STAR, Veterans Recovery Center, Outpatient Pain Rehabilitation Program, TBI/Polytrauma, SCI, Recreation Therapy Whole Health activities, National Rehabilitation Events.) Coordinate services and patient care delivery with other sections within the Neurology & Rehabilitation Service. Collaborate and consult with OKC VAHCS personnel regarding full assessment and care of veteran's needs, which is vital to maintain a coordinated treatment program for veterans with multiple disabilities. Resolves conflicts and/or issues that hinder the delivery of treatment services. Performs all other duties/activities of a staff Recreation therapist as part of daily tasks. Provides treatment in complex cases and works with great independence. Educational Responsibilities: The Supervisory Recreation Therapist coordinates the continuing education, facility training requirements and management of training programs for therapeutic recreation staff, students, and/or interns. Identify developmental and training needs of employees; providing and making provisions for identified development and training. Coordinate and monitor the student clinical affiliation program in support of the Education Service. Develop and plan educational programs to include patient, family, caretakers, and professional personnel. Educate other facility personnel in the scope of Therapeutic Recreation programs and clinics involving a variety of healthcare specialties and interdisciplinary teams. Administrative Responsibilities: The incumbent provides leadership to maintain an effective and productive Therapeutic Recreation Section with a continuous flow and exchange of information between employees and other facility personnel. Incumbent effectively supervises, directs, and manages a diverse Therapeutic Recreation/Creative Arts Therapy staff. Incumbent will be recognized as a source of sound advice by other supervisors within the facility. Specific responsibilities include, but not limited to: Balance multiple responsibilities, set priorities, delegate tasks, meet multiple deadlines, analyze organizational problems, and develop and implement effective solutions. Make decisions that affect staff and other resources with wide latitude of control and independent judgement. Assign work to subordinates based upon priorities, with selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments and capabilities of employees. All assignments delegated with stated achievable expectations, goals and deadlines identified. Ensure timely performance of satisfactory or exceptional quality of work. Gives advice, counseling, or instructions to individual employees on both clinical and administrative matters. Coordinate team meetings for planning and developing program goals and objectives for the section. Utilizes effective skills in interpersonal relationships and conflict resolution. Communicate information to subordinates and other sections of the facility related to Therapeutic Recreation Section. Represents staff within the Neurology & Rehabilitation Service and other multidisciplinary committees within the OKC VAHCS, VISN and National. Organizes and supervises the Therapeutic Recreation Section. Guides and manages clinics in respect to work assignments, monitors productivity and workload, audits performance. Ensures consults are acted upon per scheduling directives/policies and in the most expeditious manner. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: Citizenship. Citizen of the United States (U.S.). (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7407(a)). English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English, as required by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). Education: A bachelor's degree or higher, from an accredited college or university, with a major in therapeutic recreation or recreation/leisure, with an option and/or emphasis in therapeutic recreation. The degree must be approved by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); OR, A bachelor's degree or higher in any field from an accredited college or university and must be a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS). The degree must be approved by the NCTRC. If hired under this education, the certification cannot be waived. Certification: Applicants must be certified in recreation therapy as a CTRS by the NCTRC. If hired under paragraph 3b(1)(b), certification cannot be waived. Grade Determinations. In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates: Supervisory Recreation Therapist, GS-13 Experience. At least one year of creditable experience at the next lower grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: i. Ability to provide treatment in complex cases and work with great independence. ii. Ability to balance multiple responsibilities, set priorities, delegate tasks, meet multiple deadlines, analyze organizational problems, and develop and implement effective solutions. iii. Ability to analyze organizational and operational problems and use data to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity within the service. iv. Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers, to include conflict management. v. Ability to utilize evidence-based practices and clinical practice guidelines in a professional area and to guide the staff in applying these tools. vi. Knowledge of organizational theories and strategies to positively impact the overall goals and objectives within the service. vii. Knowledge related to administrative functions, such as fiscal, material supply, equipment management, and clinical and program management. Preferred Experience: Extensive experience with therapeutic recreation and alternative therapeutic modalities that fall under Therapeutic Recreation. Experience with clinical program development and implementation. With monitoring performance measure and action items to address program ethics matters. Physical Requirements: The work assignments involve regular and recurring physical exertion such as prolonged periods of time; standing, frequent bending, reaching, stooping, and stretching to set-up and take apart equipment and apparatus; lifting and repositioning patients; pushing or pulling heavy objects including wheelchairs; leading or directing physical exercise or adaptive sports. Assisting severely disabled patients and assisting patients in ambulation. The work requires specific, common physical characteristic and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity to perform intricate therapeutic procedures, as well as skill and ability in the therapist's respective forms of discipline.
