About the Position: This position is located in the Receipts and Issues Division of the Letterkenny Munitions Center at Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
Duties
Assemble ammunition and explosives.
Assemble and/or lay out combustible material such as scrap lumber, boxes, fiber containers, or excelsior.
Exercise extreme care in working with unstable and usually hazardous items.
Destroy ammunition by burning, detonation, flashing furnace and/or Thermal Treatment Chamber.
Operate heavy equipment to haul or bury materials.
Operate up to and including 28,000 lb lift capacity forklift truck.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Applicant must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
- Ammunition certification in accordance with AMC-R 350-4 is required within one year of appointment. Must be cleared IAW requirements of AR 190-11, Physical Security of Arms, Ammunition, and Explosives.
- This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence are not eligible for this position.
- This position is subject to pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter in compliance with the Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Program.
- The applicant must pass a pre-employment physical and subsequent periodic medical examinations in accordance with DoD 6055-5-M. Applicant must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- A forklift license for up to 28,000 pounds is required within 120 days of appointment.
- This position requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment and respirator.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
WG-08
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an EXPLOSIVES OPERATOR without more than normal supervision. Experienced in explosives and demilitarization operations, Handling explosives by following safety requirements and limits; AND Skilled in operating heavy equipment. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
WG-06
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an EXPLOSIVES OPERATOR without more than normal supervision. Using technical manuals when assembling/disassembling munition components, Following safety requirements and limits while handling munitions; AND Skilled in operating heavy equipment. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
WG-05
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an EXPLOSIVES OPERATOR without more than normal supervision. Use common hand and power tools, Familiarity with explosives and munitions AND follow safety requirements and limits at all times. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: Work involves standing, walking, stooping, reaching and bending, pushing and pulling. Work may be done in awkward and cramped positions. Duties involve moderately heavy physical effort for approximately 20% to 50% of the total work cycle. Careful attention required in eye, hand, foot coordination in operating lever devices on machines while watching the load and its clearance with other objects, and in setting and attaching detonating or initiating devices to explosives.
Working Conditions: Work is performed predominately outside, and in control house and near electrical power lines. Incumbent is exposed to dirt, unpleasant noise, dust, heat, and fumes from equipment. Subject to inclement weather, mud rain, dust, etc., and where extremes in cold and heat frequently occur. Some operations require workers to wear protective clothing and respirator.
Exposure to Hazards: Work is performed around unusually hazardous items of bulk explosives, deteriorated ammunition, etc., for a paramount portion of the time 25% or more. Hazards also exist where probable normal mishap could result in serious burns, loss of finger joints, fractures, mashed fingers, loss of life, etc., from mishaps on bulldozer and crane or from premature firing or igniting devices while dropping or handling explosives and working on low voltage electrical circuits. Danger to self due to exposure to unusually hazardous agents is compensated by environmental pay and no credit has been given this element in establishing the grade level for this job.
