The Registered Respiratory Therapist position is located in the Pulmonary Lab at the Peoria, IL CBOC facility. The Registered Therapist performs all respiratory therapy procedures to inpatient and outpatient. The Registered Respiratory Therapist must demonstrate in delivering and improving care to the adult and geriatric population. The incumbent specializes in treating adults ages 18-64 and 65+ who need pulmonary testing.

Duties

Perform emergency intubations outside of the OR for all patients requiring emergency airway management, measures tracheal cuff pressures, and records in CPRS. Provides oxygen and life support to patients during CPR. Responds to all STAT calls code 1 (code blue) & code 5 (Rapid Respond Team) throughout the hospital. Sets up, monitors, and troubleshoots volume noninvasive ventilators for those patients that require noninvasive ventilation. Checks to make certain that all emergency equipment is functional before needs arise. Monitors patients for signs indicating a high potential for loss of an extremity or cardiopulmonary arrest. Recognizes test results which imply a substantial risk of immediate morbidity and uses judgment to take immediate measures guided by protocols to ensure the safety and timely treatment of patients. Evaluates a patient's overall cardiopulmonary condition in relationship to the modes of therapy being delivered in order to determine the need and/or effectiveness of treatment. Charts all modes of therapy and patient assessments in CPRS. Verifies all physician orders before therapy is administered to make certain that all orders are correct. Verifies all medication administered to patients are the correct dosage and within the expiration date. Administers medication nebulizers to patients requiring aerosol medication. Responds to all STAT calls from nurses and physicians for equipment failure and malfunction. Draws arterial blood gases Calibrates, performs user maintenance, and trouble shoots all pulmonary equipment used. Performs Electrocardiogram (EKG) q. Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) while following policy and procedure guidelines for SPS unit for sterilization and cleaning the PFT 3way valve mouthpiece. Patient education, evaluation, and setup of all Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) equipment. Inpatient home oxygen education, evaluation, and therapy. Nocturnal pulse oximetry. Administers incentive spirometry per physician orders. Changes all disposable items according to policy and procedure and makes certain that all non-disposable items. Instructs patients how to improve their ability to breathe during times of respiratory distress. Prepares and installs pulmonary equipment for patient's use including evaluation of equipment, operation and explanation of procedures to the patient. Recognizes malfunctioning pulmonary equipment and reports to supervisor immediately. Provides a complete and thorough report to oncoming shift. Performs chest percussion and postural drainage. Performs tracheal lavage and sputum inductions. Removes secretions from patient's airways using a sterile suction catheter attached to a vacuum source. Qualifications

Basic Requirements:- Education. Individuals must have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the CoARC or its successor. Licensure: Afull, current and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT (and maintain for the duration of employment). Credential: Must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a valid, current, unrestricted credential of RRT. In addition to the basic requirements applicants must meet the following to be considered at the GS-11 Grade Level: Experience, Licensure and Credential: Candidates must have: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level. Experience includes: obtain, interpret and analyze physiological specimens and data. They consult with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure quality of patient care within area of specialty. Manage and maintain the airway and ventilation of the patient through the use of appropriate mechanical means. Assess and evaluate patients to determine and recommend intervention to develop and implement a plan of care, such as, implementing protocols, intubation, monitoring critical systems and uses advanced modes of ventilation. Provide outpatient services such as home ventilators, PAP therapy, oxygen therapy and COPD care. AND Hold an active license and RRT credential. In addition to the requirements above, candidates must demonstrate all the following KSAs: Ability to collaboratively consult with physicians and other healthcare professionals for complex respiratory care to develop care plans to provide favorable patient outcomes. Skill in evaluating the efficacies of therapeutic modalities. Skill in performing advanced airway and ventilation management. References: VA Handbook 5005/141 PART II APPENDIX G11 Physical Requirements: This position is mainly sedentary but does require long periods of time standing, walking and sometimes carrying equipment to codes. Incumbent must not be color blind.
