About the Position: Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York, a historically unique and geographically beautiful area, offering bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.
Duties
Serve as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, responsible for providing technical guidance in compliance with OSHA standards, procedures, and regulations.
Responsible for the development, organization, execution, and assessment of one or more sub-elements of a U.S. Army Garrison Safety Program.
Provide technical advice to Commanders, directors, staff officers, managers, division chiefs, and first line supervisors regarding compliance
requirements, resolution of conflicts, hazard assessments, and high-hazard abatement actions.
Review and comment on directorate safety programs and Standing Operating Procedures.
Provide technical information to the Garrison Safety Manager on program initiatives for subordinate directorate programs to minimize high-hazard risks and achieve compliance with established mandates and criteria.
Plan and conduct surveys of facilities and operations to evaluate the effectiveness of safety and health requirements and practices in the work environment.
Conduct independent accident investigations of all classes and categories of accidents to determine and analyze contributing factors and establish corrective measures.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Government Driver’s license.
- Must Be able to obtain CP-12 Level 1 certification and Explosive Level 1 certification within one year.
- Must be able to lift 50lbs.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.

GS-09 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, which includes: (1) Conducting safety and occupational health surveys to identify and evaluate hazardous operations/conditions; (2) Applying knowledge of safety and occupational health principles, methods and/or techniques to control or eliminate unsafe physical conditions, equipment and machine hazards, or risks in human performance which may cause injury or damage; and (3) Recommending possible courses of actions to eliminate or control unsafe acts or conditions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-07)

GS-09 Education: Successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or master's or equivalent graduate degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. GS-09 Education and Experience Combined: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.(Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
GS-11 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully, the duties of the position, which includes 1.) Performing scheduled onsite safety surveys for assigned organizations; 2.) Advising supervisors and safety representatives of appropriate safety and occupational health measures to control, eliminate hazardous operating processes and environmental processes and environmental conditions; 3) Providing technical safety training to supervisors and employees using a wide variety of materials, publications, exhibits, protective devices, and visual aids; 4.) Investigating mishaps involving injuries, property damage and preparing final report with findings. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-09)

GS-11 Education: Successful completion of a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.(Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
