Duties
The Maintenance Mechanic is assigned to the Engineering Service Line of VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System, Topeka, Kansas.
Incumbent performs general maintenance of support work including but not limited to the following:
Survey wards and buildings
Review and complete tasks as noted on Work Orders.
Maintain and repair service equipment.
Install, modify, repair and replace building plumbing systems, eyewash stations, water coolers, and any other associated plumbing systems
Use plans, sketches, wiring diagrams and specifications to lay out, assemble and install electrical equipment/systems and perform new construction
Perform tasks in accordance with national electrical codes and accepted trades and practices.
Test, troubleshoot, install and maintain electrical equipment (110, 208 & 280 volt), appliances and systems
Considers surroundings, effects on machinery and effects on environment when administering gas, oils and lubricants to equipment.
Repairs electrical wiring and lighting systems, motors, other electrical and patient care equipment.
Repairs plumbing system and equipment, including valves, strainers, traps, piping, etc.
Repairs, troubleshoots, performs maintenance on equipment to include scrubber, burnishers, vacuums, and commercial kitchen equipment.
Maintains a tool and parts inventory for assigned tools, parts, and equipment.
Uses measuring devices, tapes, volt-ohm-amp meters, etc. in repair and diagnosis of assigned duties.
Applies information in maintenance and repair manuals in the repair and upkeep of assigned equipment.
Uses powered tools for maintenance and repair of equipment and building systems, including drills, sewer machines, grinders, saws, etc.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM, subject to night, weekend and holiday callback.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Position requires some heavy lifting, movement of ladders required along with stamina to perform physical labor. Pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder level, use of both hands, standing, bending, and walking is required for the entire shift. Ability for muscular and mental coordination is necessary. Working conditions include hazards caused by hot steam and hot water pipes, extremes of heat, sewer fumes, falls from ladders and scaffolds, bumps from overhead pipes or low ceilings in the working area. May be assigned to areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. May be required to wear personal protective clothing as dictated by policy.
