Duties

Operates various types of land survey, hydrographic survey and/or other equipment. Determine and enter various input parameters as required to perform the survey. Integrate survey equipment and survey software on computer systems. Assists boat operators in performing duties such as handling lines, serving as lookout, routine maintenance, general boat keeping, etc. Processes, evaluates, and edits electronic field data for entry into a computer aided mapping, design, and analysis system. Performs administrative duties such as initiating procurement actions, writing purchase requests, conducting and documenting safety meetings, filling out vehicle and survey equipment reports, etc.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • All Army personnel must comply with safety regulations, occupational safety and health standards, and other safety directives and orders.
  • Incumbent is enrolled in the hearing conservation program and must undergo pre-employment, annual, and pre-termination audiograms.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Incumbent is required to operate a motor vehicle; therefore must have and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Work assignments involve working outside, standing, climbing, and walking through rugged terrain.
  • Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a USACE license for the operation of motorboats less than 26 feet within 6 months of employment.
  • The duties of this position require travel up to approximately 75% of the time. Travel could be as much as 200 days a year.
  • Incumbent must be able to enter and exit through boat hatches that have a width of 15 in., lifting scientific and surveying equipment that weigh 50 lbs, and sustained physical effort when operating a 20 lbs chainsaw.
  • This position has an on-call requirement.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-05: One year of specialized experience which includes meeting ANY OF THE FOLLOWING: 1) Prepare field notes, sketches, reference maps, and/or cross sections for engineering analysis. 2) Operate land and/or hydrographic surveying equipment. 3) Operate tide, gages, underwater bottom samplers, a side scan sonar, skiffs, hydrographic survey boats less than 26 feet long. 4) Utilize hydrographic survey software to acquire and process data. 5) Assists boat operators in performing duties such as handling lines, serving as lookout, routine maintenance, general boat keeping. 6) Processes, evaluates, and edits electronic field data for entry into a computer aided mapping, design, and analysis system. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution (a) with major study in an appropriate field of surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology; OR (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of the following courses: surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics.; OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. GS-06: One year of specialized experience which includes meeting TWO OF THE FOLLOWING: 1) Prepare field notes, sketches, reference maps, and/or cross sections for engineering analysis. 2) Operate land and/or hydrographic surveying equipment. 3) Operate tide, gages, underwater bottom samplers, a side scan sonar, skiffs, hydrographic survey boats less than 26 feet long. 4) Utilize hydrographic survey software to acquire and process data. 5) Assists boat operators in performing duties such as handling lines, serving as lookout, routine maintenance, general boat keeping. 6) Processes, evaluates, and edits electronic field data for entry into a computer aided mapping, design, and analysis system. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position such as; surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages. GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes meeting ANY THREE OF THE FOLLOWING: 1) Prepare field notes, sketches, reference maps, and/or cross sections for engineering analysis. 2) Operate land and/or hydrographic surveying equipment. 3) Operate tide, gages, underwater bottom samplers, a side scan sonar, skiffs, hydrographic survey boats less than 26 feet long. 4) Utilize hydrographic survey software to acquire and process data. 5) Assists boat operators in performing duties such as handling lines, serving as lookout, routine maintenance, general boat keeping. 6) Processes, evaluates, and edits electronic field data for entry into a computer aided mapping, design, and analysis system. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
