This Assistant Hospital Housekeeping Officer position is in Environmental Management Services at the VA Bedford Healthcare Systems, located at the Bedford location. This position is a full-time, supervisory position at 40 hours per week.
Duties
The Assistant Hospital Housekeeping Officer exercises management and program responsibility for hospital housekeeping operations and ancillary functions. The Incumbent plans, organizes, directs, manages, reviews and evaluates an augmented program, which includes responsibility for Uniform Appropriation, Environmental Health and Sanitation, Pest Control, and Bio hazardous Waste management programs. This also includes, the more traditional functions of waste management and maintenance of sanitary and visual cleanliness for hospital floors, ceilings, windows and walls, as well as, overseeing the management of the Medical Center's unique programs such as Fitness Centers, Fisher House, etc.
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Responsible for implementing and managing the EMS activities in coordination with the Chief within Center policies;
Provides input to such areas as Clostridium difficile control, disinfection, handling, and disposal of biohazardous waste, bloodborne pathogen precautions and disposal of anti-neoplastic materials;
Ensures the development of an adequate environmental programs training and compliance program;
Applies knowledge of environmental sanitation and infection control; Using antimicrobial agents in the disinfection, sanitization and/or sterilization of surfaces and equipment;
Directs a certified interior and exterior pest management program; and
Demonstrates knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

Selectee required to serve one year supervisory/managerial probationary period.

In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held.
This position is not a Bargaining Unit position.
This position is covered by locality-based comparability pay.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/27/2024.
Preferred Experience: At least 3 years of supervisory/managerial experience in housekeeping/janitorial.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-12 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-11 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Provides input to determine long- and short-range planning, for establishing overall policy and budgeting; prepares reports reflecting inspection results, analyzes trends, prepares corrective and preventive actions; provides leadership, ensuring staff is trained on all aspects of the position, and all procedures, guidelines, policies, and written/ verbal instructions are followed; reviews requests for new equipment, products and procedures, and evaluates current methods and systems to improve efficiency and environment of care; and provides information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in-person, in written form, and email, so others will understand.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent walks throughout the medical center, and will be trained in all aspects of Environmental Management Service which requires stooping, bending, walking, lifting, and twisting.
