This position serves as a Forestry Technician in a BLM within Medford District with duty locations in Grants Pass and Medford Oregon.
Salary Ranges:
GS-05: $39,576 to $51,446
GS-06: $44,117 to $57,354
GS-07: $49,025 to $63,733
Duties
As the Forestry Technician in this position, you will:
This position works as a member of the Field Office's Silviculture group, providing technical assistance to the area Silviculturists, and interacting with an interdisciplinary team of other resource specialists. The employee collects forest stand data, updates written inventory records, and maintains or creates files in GPS and GIS and other databases. Most work is accomplished through contracts, and the employee is a Project Inspector for forestry-related service and stewardship contracts. Red-carded employees may be available to participate on wildfire incidents with supervisory approval.
Duties will include, but are not limited to, assisting with preparing and administering forest development projects including:
Completing regeneration and stocking surveys and making recommendations for treatments.
Measuring trees, evaluating tree characteristics, recording data.
Laying out treatment areas and generating maps of treatment areas.
Inspecting treatments and surveys on forest development contract projects, including cone collection, scion collection, planting, stocking surveys, pre-commercial thinning, brushing and vegetation management, stand exams, and commercial stand tree marking.
Marking timber using established marking guides and specific instructions.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- May be required to complete background investigation.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, a copy of your unofficial transcripts must be provided with your application.
Forestry Technician position at the GS-05 grade level you must possess one of the following:
A. One full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following in a developmental capacity: (1) Conducting segments of forest inventories; (2) Examining timber stands to determine need for insect and disease control, stand resilience, drought and fire resiliency, and thinning to maximize growth, vigor and yield; and (3) Creating and compiling maps of forest and woodland areas, proposed project treatment areas, harvest areas, burned areas, and/or special use areas.
OR
B. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. You must submit transcripts for verification.
OR
C. An equivalent combination of the specialized experience stated in 'A' and education stated in 'B'. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to one year of specialized experience. Determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required in 'A'. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for 'B'. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must submit transcripts for verification.
Forestry Technician position at the GS-06 grade level you must possess the following:
Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following in a developmental capacity: (1) Conducting segments of forest inventories; (2) Examining timber stands to determine need for insect and disease control, stand resilience, drought and fire resiliency, and thinning to maximize growth, vigor and yield; and (3) Creating and compiling maps of forest and woodland areas, proposed project treatment areas, harvest areas, burned areas, and/or special use areas.
OR
Education: One full year of graduate level education in fire science, fire management or closely related discipline. One year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis;
OR
Combination: A combination of education and experience as listed above. (To compute, first, determine your experience as a percentage of the experience required; then determine your graduate education as a percentage of the education required. The total percentage must equal at least 100%)
Forestry Technician position at the GS-07 grade level you must possess one of the following:
A. One full year of specialized experience, comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) Recognizing variations in timber stand conditions such as species composition, age classes, past silvicultural treatments, basal areas, vertical and horizonal structural composition (2) Conducting proposed timber sale, commercial/noncommercial unit reconnaissance and unit design for proposed vegetation treatments or timber sale tracts; and (3) Conducting field surveys of project boundaries, timber sale boundaries, proposed roads, and/or property lines.
OR
B. Successful completion of 1 full year of graduate level education which included courses directly related to the work of the position such as: forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. You must submit transcripts for verification.
OR
C. An equivalent combination of the specialized experience stated in 'A' and education stated in 'B'. Determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required in 'A'. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for 'B'. (Only education in excess of the first 9 semester hours of graduate level education is eligible for this combination). Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must submit transcripts for verification.
TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible.
One year at the GS-05 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-06 level.
One year at the GS-06 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level.
(Must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade. No award SF-50 will be accepted).
Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service). Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using
education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.
GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
