This position is located at the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.
Duties
This is a bargaining unit position. This position is represented by AFGE. Please note that as provided for in the AFGE/VA Master Agreement the FIRST area of consideration for this position will be permanent employees of the local facility in which this position is being filled, the SECOND area of consideration will be employees at other VA facilities, and the THIRD area of consideration will be all other eligibles.
The incumbent will conduct preventive maintenance inspections on carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical operations, sheet metal, air-conditioning and masonry in buildings, restrooms, shelters, and shops in the cemetery. Incumbent will repair, replace parts or assemblies and lubricate as needed: assists maintenance mechanic in support of overall unit work requirements. Performs electrical work to install or repair electrical systems and fixtures incidental to construction or maintenance of the facilities. Work involves testing, removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, fixing defective wiring, controls and equipment such as broken or bare wiring, burned out switches, controls, relays or loose connections or fittings or damaged light fixtures. Performs plumbing duties, such as removing, installing cleaning and replacing defective parts of utilities, water supply and disposal systems. Uses mechanical skills to repair or replace components on electrical control panels for irrigation control panels, pumps and filtration controls. Works on air compressors, heating and air conditioning systems, assisting the Maintenance Mechanic in repairs, checking for shorts and proper voltage, resistance, etc. May assist with standard sheet metal work on simple items as a part of maintenance repairs. Performs basic masonry functions in repair and replacing cement blocks, bricks, stones or ceramic tiles. May use asphalt to patch pot holes. Welds metals used in the galvanized steel pipes and angle irons, black metal or black steel, using proper safety equipment such as face masks, gas masks, gloves and bibs in order to repair, replace or install necessary equipment or utility function requiring this task.

Your background must demonstrate work involved in the full range of building and maintenance trades to include carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, pest control, asphalt repairs, etc. This includes repair and preventive maintenance of irrigation systems, maintaining and repairing buildings and physical structures, facilities, and utilities using hand and power tools.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be physically able to lift and handle heavy objects up to 100 pounds while assembling, repairing, and installing various mechanical units related to the trade. Also is required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, and work from ladders, scaffolds, cramped positions over and around mechanical equipment for extended periods of time.
Working Conditions: The incumbent will be subjected to the hazards of working in a veterans' cemetery, and to the hazards of the building maintenance trades. Will be required to work in places such as ditches/excavations, roofs, in-ground electrical pull boxes, etc. while being exposed to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises and to the noise and vibration of operating machinery. Work areas and floors may contain oil, grease, and water. Safety equipment will be provided and will be required to be worn or used during many tasks of the trades. Work assignments will be throughout the cemetery and personnel contacts will be varied, requiring conduct reflecting professionalism and tact. Communication at all levels will be in a respectful, polite, and businesslike manner. Incumbent must interact with coworkers in a manner that will, enhance the harmony and cooperation of the section and cemetery at all times.
