This position will be located in one of the GAO Teams: Financial Management and Assurance (FMA); Financial Markets and Community Investment (FMCI); Forensic Audits and Investigative Services (FAIS); Homeland Security and Justice (HSJ); and Science, Technology Assessment, and Analytics (STAA). As a Communications Analyst (Written) you will be responsible for supporting teams and offices in developing and producing written products and providing instruction on message development and writing.

Duties

As a Communications Analyst (Written), CS-1001-2 your typical work assignments may include the following: Work with teams or individuals to write reports and testimony statements using plain language to help communicate GAO's complex findings to a general audience. Provide advanced-level written communications support concurrently to multiple teams or individuals working on complex or high-risk reviews of agencies and programs. Build and maintain strong working relationships and collaborate with staff at all levels. Facilitate discussions to help teams assess evidence, identify themes, and reach consensus on a message. Review and revise drafts to improve coherence, logical flow, clarity, and adherence to GAO quality and stylistic standards. Serve as a resource and provide training or coaching on all matters involving the written content of GAO products, including clear and concise writing. Work with analysts, particularly new staff, to improve their skills for ensuring technical information is presented in a manner that is logical, clear, consistent, and readable.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification Requirements: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the CS-I, AC-III, PE-I, PT-I or GS-11 grade level in the federal service that demonstrates your ability in (1) organizing, drafting, reviewing and revising written narratives for reports, journal articles, testimony statements, speeches, academic journals, or other professional publications; (2) explaining in writing the results of research and analysis of scientific, academic, public policy, or other complex topics using layman's terms (3) facilitating discussions among or collaborating with subject matter experts or diverse groups of stakeholders; and (4) teaching/coaching adults to improve their skills for writing narratives about complex ideas logically and clearly for an audience of non-experts. The ideal candidate for this position has expertise using expert English-language writing skills to communicate complex or technical information clearly and concisely. The ideal candidate also has extensive experience applying critical thinking skills and collaborating with diverse teams of subject matter experts to organize, draft, and refine professional written products. These may include public reports, published articles, or scholarly essays. This candidate will also have experience using soft skills (such as listening, flexibility, problem solving, and empathy) to influence others over whom the candidate does not have direct authority; facilitating group discussions to develop a clear, unified message; and teaching or coaching adults to write in accordance with professional or institutional standards (such as the Plain Writing Act). In addition, the ideal candidate will have experience independently managing a large and dynamic workload involving multiple teams or individuals and concurrent projects. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
