This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until May 31, 2024. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be April5, 2024 , with subsequent cut-off dates on the end of each month. Duties
This position serves as a Pipefitter within the Facility Management Service of the VA New Jersey Health Care System. The primary functions include working with pipes and fittings from a range of high pressure to low pressure steam.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Layout pipe, thread, rough-in and finish bathroom, rough-in and finish kitchen;
Conducts minor welding repairs and fabrication requiring the use of oxygen, acetylene, arc welding, and pipe welding;
Inspects, adjusts, cleans, and repairs plumbing fixtures and systems, steam operated equipment, heating and water systems, waste lines, kitchen and laundry equipment, air compressors, medical compressed air systems, vacuum systems, oxygen systems, and natural gas distribution systems;
Reads and interprets blueprints and manufacturers' specifications for installing and repairing equipment;
Conducts safety and preventive maintenance inspections of utility systems and equipment in accordance with VA regulations and National Codes;
Interprets and applies building plans and blueprints to layout angles, arcs, and circles;
Utilizes tools and equipment such as sliding squares, measuring tapes, dividers, and chalk lines;
Performs other related duties as assigned.
This occupation is currently approved for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive through 10/7/2024. Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI for a pro-rated amount if onboard prior to the CSI expiration date. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI.

Physical Requirements/ Working Conditions: Frequently handles, lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment weighting up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts or carries items in excess of that weight. Makes repairs and installations on systems and equipment that are in hard to reach areas. Work also requires climbing ladders when performing repairs or installing equipment. Incumbent is trained in confined space entry to make necessary repairs in steam pits, vaults and/or confined spaces involving overhead work. The job requires walking, standing, sitting, stooping, crouching, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent is also required to work overhead for extended periods of time when required.
Employee is required to work inside and outside, in steam confined areas and manholes. Must be able to work in wet di it trenches, on ladders and in extremely hot pipe areas. Employee is subject to burns from steam or condensate lines. Incumbent has possible contact with chemicals and acids in drain lines. Employee should be able to complete an Asbestos Awareness Course for safety precautions. Should be able to pass a respirator fittest for safety reasons, relative to working in high dust areas, etc.
