This position performs journeyman-level carpentry work, maintenance and repair, and preventive maintenance throughout the Columbus VA Medical Center and is located within the Engineering Service under the supervision of the Building Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor.

Duties

Selects, installs and repairs doors and door accessories, windows, and structural members, such as well studding, floor and ceiling joists, roof rafters, flooring, and roof sheathing; installs suspended ceilings, insulation, paneling, resilient floor covering, rubberbase, shelving, shingles, wall and floor cabinets, carpeting, plastic laminate on wall, hangs and finishes drywall; constructs/installs counter tops, cabinets and items of a special nature which cannot be purchased due to uncommon measurements/needs, etc. Performs maintenance, repair and/or construction of a variety of structures and surfaces of brick, block, tile, stone and other related materials. Repairs/restores/assembles/installs furniture by reproducing parts; reproduces building parts made of wood, such as cornice, antique moldings, windows, etc. Incumbent may occasionally drive a truck up to 1 1/2 tons to deliver materials; install outdoor Christmas decorations; assist roofers in the application of roofing. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Position Description Title/PD#: Carpenter/PD914200 Physical Requirements: Must be able to stoop, bend and stand for long periods of time; climb and work on ladders, scaffolding and roof tops. Must have sufficient strength to lift paneling, plywood sheets, doors, beams, etc. Some work in this position requires much overhead arm movement. The incumbent is required daily to work strenuously and occasionally may lift and carry items of up to 40 pounds or more unassisted and lift or move heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
