Duties
As a Staff Assistant, you will:
Make appointments for the Assistant Secretary at own discretion and is authorized to acknowledge invitations to attend or address important gatherings. Independently schedule meetings for the Assistant Secretary, assuring they are noted on his calendar. Gather background materials for use at the meetings and notify appropriate HUD personnel on meetings of interest to them or which they should attend. Assemble all pertinent background materials prior to the meetings.
Receive and screen telephone and personal calls from high level private and government officials, Members of Congress and staff. Handle directly those matters that do not need the immediate, direct attention of the Assistant Secretary, and refer, with priority, those that should be addressed by the Assistant Secretary.
Coordinate all the Assistant Secretary's travel arrangements, complete travel orders and travel vouchers. Work with various organizations on travel arrangements when the Assistant Secretary is scheduled at conferences and meetings.
Receive visitors to the Assistant Secretary's office and if unscheduled, tactfully determines the importance of the visit. Determine which matters can be handled directly and those that should be referred to the Assistant Secretary or other staff members. Maintain knowledge of congressional calendars including session terms, recess dates, pertinent committee schedules and leadership meetings and activities.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized Experience: For the GS-10, you must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-09 level, or equivalent, that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes:
Greeting visitors and screening callers; AND
Receiving and reviewing documents for procedural, grammatical, and typographical accuracy; AND
Tracking time and attendance in a database or other electronic system; AND
Making travel arrangements and preparing travel vouchers.
Experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. Time-in-Grade: In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-10 you must have been at the GS-09 level for 52 weeks.
Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment.
