Duties

In this position you will use your expertise and knowledge of the makeup, operation, and make determinations on repairs and maintenance of motor vehicles and help strengthen the Department's ability to perform homeland security functions by ensuring the availability of a safe and reliable vehicle fleet. This position starts at an hourly rate of $26.28 (WG-10, Step 1) to $30.67 (WG-10, Step 5). As an Automotive Mechanic, your duties and responsibilities include: Troubleshooting, repairing, and overhauling major components and systems Making independent judgments and determines the type and extent of repairs needed Completing repairs with little or no check during their progress or upon completion Troubleshooting using visual inspections and auditory tests

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. To minimally qualify for the WG-10 grade level you must meet the Screen Out Element/s Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision. To meet the screen out element(s), you should haveexperience performing the following duties: Completing repairs and adjustments in accordance with manufacturers' specification and service bulletins and ensures that vehicle systems (e.g., lighting systems, steering mechanisms, mechanical and hydraulic braking systems, and exhaust and related emission control systems) function in accordance with safety regulations set by various regulatory agencies. Using a wide variety of test equipment such as computerized engine analyzers, compression testers, test benches, multimeters, and special feeler and dial gauges in tracing hard-locate defects and problems. Specializing, troubleshooting and repairing of a wide variety of major systems (as described above) and in the tearing down, overhauling, and rebuilding of one or a limited variety of vehicles such as automobiles, trucks, buses, and tractors. Failure to meet the Screen out Element/s will result in an ineligible rating. In addition to the experience described above, you will also be evaluated on the basis of your overall level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities) in the following areas: Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (Includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Trouble shooting NOTE: Your resume must explicitly indicate how you meet this requirement, otherwise you will be found ineligible.
